Hi,
Just got the OATS rulebook through the post and noticed that, for those living on-site, all guests have to be off the airport by 2300 AND can't enter your room at all!
Is celibacy a pre-requisite for the course? Assuming that I can hold down a love life and ATPL training (any thoughts on this welcome), are these rules rigidly enforced or are they just covering themselves against people having mass orgies and the permanent residence of other halves?
Any ex-Oxford people tested the system??
If it's bad news..any good B&Bs nearby!!
Yours in hope and thanks,
UJ

Hi UJ,
I choked a bit when I read the rule book... does this mean that when I move down there I cannot have any external friends in my room whatsoever (maybe the rooms are not big enough!) never mind the better half... and does this mean that Walsh Wenker will have to say "Sorry wife, dear, but you ain't allowed in my room and you absolutely can't stay.. now off back to Wales!"
Again, any past Oxford dudes got any comments?
Regards,
SB

They treat the dorms like that of a boarding school - after 11pm each section has a dorm master who checks each room - under the beds and in the wardrobes for any extra folk. Fortunately there isn't a lights out rule
and you don't have to be in your beds by 11pm. The janitor requires all visitors to sign in and out.

I must say i was a bit shocked by the booklet, its sounds a bit like american bootcamp........"I love my rifle, there are many like it but this one is mine etc"
The 11pm rule is a bit sly but rules are there to be broken!
now stop eyeballing me and get down and give me 20 cadet

I went to Oxford a few years ago, only on an upgrade course, not as a 509er, so didn't have to comply with rules about uniform etc, which I thought was a pile of pants anyway. OK, back to the point, I noticed that a lot of self-sponsored students didn't bother with accom on the field cos it's crap, expensive, and as someone else pointed out, run like a boarding school. It's invariably cheaper and nicer to try and organise a house-share if poss. Stating the obvious I know, but having seen the accom, I can't understand how anybody in their right mind would choose to live there, unless of course an airline is footing the bill for you and not giving you any other option.

Blimey,
Sound's like all the old Sgt Majors from the RAF are in control at OATS.
Block and SB - Glad to hear you guys were similarly shocked! I feel slightly less bad now. If it really is that awful, maybe we can find a bedsit and take out big loans!
Now for the REALLY difficult question!! - how to tell the girlfriend she is illegal on-site!!!

Dudes - if you're the kind of guys to let that sort of rule get in between you and punani, then you ain't got the initiative or priorities we want in the airlines anyway!
Don't sweat it, notice there is no rule about not doing it in any of the unlocked PA34s

Barbara.. hello again! Please tell me that you are winding us up? I find it insulting to think that anybody could think people need to live "without external influences." That's garbage.
Anyone tell us what the rooms at Oxford are actually like? Am I going back to a university hall.. or maybe not, my halls had ensuite showers and loos!
Hmm, by my reckoning that means that not even my Dad is allowed in my room, which will make it hard for him to help me move in!! Duh..

SB
PS- Brock, have we spoken already? If not drop me a line!

This is going to be a witty topic!
I can only speak for the very posh Cherwell Mansions part of the accomodation, but no such rule appeared in force when I was there.
Just check out the state of the communal areas on Monday mornings and listen to the cleaners complain. (well worth getting in their good books by the way..to get the latest goss about the place)
Ah... very happy days- I enjoyed living 'on campus' as it were, even if £95 p/w was steep (especially for Cherwell!)
I wouldn't take the rule book too seriously, but bear in mind people are taking flying/ground tests every day. Moderation in everything I guess.

Seem to recall a similar statement in the rules for staying at Cranfield University's Dorms, however no one paid any attention to them. Several people in multiple rooms on a very regular basis, and not just from the CabAir clan (fortunately). Shame this old fashioned attitude of (flying) schools still exists. Let's face it, they trust us after a year or so to fly a $50 million+ aircraft, but we can't have friends over when we want to. Does this not seem odd to anyone else?

A mate of mine finished at OATS about a month ago. I visited him there, got through the SIMPLEX security door by asking someone what the code was, and slept on his floor after a visit to the pub on more than one occasion.
To my mind it is a bit like a halls of residence except smaller and pokier! Certainly a little more pokier than Bath Uni was..but still plenty of space for two in a room...

The rules at OATS are there to be broken! I am currently at OATS, and lived in the glorious accommodation for two months before getting a house with fellow self-sponsored guys.
Many a time have my sponsored class-mates had friends up who have spent the evening in their rooms with them. There is also the huge TV room where many people have been known to crash (although only at the w/ends when the cleaners aren't around). The 'no people in your room after 11pm' is a load of cr*p.
The accommodation in general isn't too bad. Langford is the nicest block, whilst Cherwell is right by the main building and has a fire-alarm test every morning around 7am! The rooms are a decent-enough size, and you share a shower, toilet and bath with about 6/8 other people. Having never been to Uni, I have nothing to compare it with, but as long as you bring enough stuff, you can make your room pretty homely.
Just don't forget the ear-plugs to block out the noise from the numerous orgies going on down the corridor!

Oxford is like a bootcamp...you have to be signed off for day release at the weekend, in bed by 9.30 prompt...
Now do you believe that for a minute!!
Basically there is someone there most of the day until about 5, then a security guard comes around about 11.30 to turn off the lights in the study room and that's it.
You can have people stay no problem.
