Hope some of you can help. I am about to buy a package of hours for hour building. Does anyone have any tips/advice on how to try and get the best out of the hours and stretch myself a bit without an instructor in tow. Would hate to fritter away all the time floating around the countryside enjoying the view. (Well, no I wouldnt actually but you know what I mean).
Cheers

I personally would get a copy of the CPL syllabus and train to that - eg. headings to within +/- x degrees, altitude to within +/- y ft etc.
Maybe even take an instructor every 20 hours or so to hone (?) your skills and ensure no bad habits are creeping in.
I was also advised to try and fly in the area where I am going to be doing the CPL, learning all the freq.'s for the local aerodromes, local visual features etc - study the charts etc.
Good luck

I've just been in Florida to build some hours, was hoping for 50 and nearly made it. I was worried about structuring too. Obviously don't know your experience level but I flew as many night hours as possible, and as many solo cross countries too. I was determined to do several 150nm cross countries with at least two stops. Joining and landing at new airfields is good experience, as is flying throuh as many different types of airspace as possible. The instructors available were excellent. Even managed some simulated IFR. Also practiced accurate heading and altitude maintenance, short field landings/T.O., flaps/flapless etc... Really getting to know the abilities of the aircraft and myself.
Above all enjoy it! When shelling out for a block of hours I imagine it'd become easy to get fixated on flying for the hours and not do anything constructive.
Thanks to WWW for some ideas at the PPRUNE Gatbash - one hell of an evening that all should attend if possible!
