Just thought I would throw my two pence in. I actually completed an Aero Eng degree at Manchester two years ago and I really didn’t enjoy it. Don't get me wrong, Uni was a fantastic experience and I really enjoyed my time in Manchester, but the course was not what I had hoped for and I do not feel it is of much use at all with the ATPL exams. Too many people (myself included) do an Aerospace Engineering degree because they think 'planes, cool that course will be interesting'. Unless you are interested in the details of finite element analysis, advanced mathematics or CFD then you will struggle with the course. It is partly through my experience that we set up the degree programs with Leeds Uni aiming them more generally at a wide range of careers in the Aviation Industry as opposed to the engineering industry. The course is not useless if you already have a PPL as there is a management option which gives you a placement in Airport Operations as well as covering a large portion of the subjects contained in the ATPL's making them a lot easier when you come to do them (sorry moderators I realise I am biased). In the end I agree with most of the advice here, go and do a degree which appeals to you, but please don't do what I did and take Aero Eng thinking it will all be about how you put a plane together.

Bit of a stab in the dark - but LFS, are you the chap (Damian?) from Leeds Flight School who's running the flying training side of Leeds Uni's Aviation Tech course?
If so (quick question time!) in the main stage of 23hrs flying is the student really only beign trained up to solo standard? I was a little concerned by that (I'm planning on attending in 2003 if i get my BCC) as I soloed the Vigilant off a grass strip (and I'm working on the fact I was told that they're harder to fly than your average spam can) in 8hrs and kinda wondering what i'd do for the whole 23!

The 23 hours is intended to take you to the stage where you will have completed all your solo consolidation and if yuo are doing well then also some more advanced flying. The intention is to then bring you back to Leeds For your next 15 hours of navigation and further advanced training. We are taking the stance that you are being trained to a higher standard than the PPL, as your CPL is only really doing the PPL course again to a much greater level of accuracy, airmanship and professionalism. So, by training you to that higher standard to start with then you should have a lot less problems on the CPL. Also most of the instructors are CPL instructors. We are trying to make it a bit like the first part of integrated training, and if you do not go on to do a CPL you will be a very able and professional PPL. Oh, and its Dylan by the way.

Hey Piper,
You mentioned that you've seen a course in Florida which deals with Aviation Managment and Technology?

Do you have a link or any information on this please, I want to keep my options open if my UK uni plans with Leeds goes up in the air!

Thanks in advance,

Ian

Yeah sure,

There is a link on here to Comair who offer a 4 year degree with a private universit (very expensive,. e-mail me if you want an idea of some prices which they sent me) and also offer a 2 year degree at a smaller college in florida.

You will find information and links to the universities at:

www.comairacademy.com

Also Pan Am academy offer flight training with the chance of doing a distance learning degree. Their URL is:

www.panamacademy.com

I havent had a reply as of yet from pan am although their website does give a fair amount of infomration.

Tyler International Aviation also appears to have a very very resonalble price for flight training. As im sure you already know, Oxford send their students to Tyler. They are located in North East Texas.

www.tyleraviation.com

I havent found any information from tyler about degrees yet but im sure they have some sort of degree which you can do with them.

Hope this infomration helps

Merry Xmas
