Whilst I don't know a lot about ATA, I did train for my PPL at Midland Air Training next door. MATS is an excellent outfit that will train students not only to basic PPL standard, but also to IMC, Night & Multi ratings.
The Instructors, facilites and Aircraft are excellent and are (IMHO) probably the best on the Airfield.
With regard to the Airfield itself, well it has all the bells and whistles and is practically under the BHX Zone, so you have to have your wits about you. Furthermore, the ATC guys are some of the best I have met and they are exceptionally freindly, especially when things perhaps don't go quite to plan. All in all and from what I have heard about ATA, I believe you are making a choice.
Good luck & see you around C.T. sometime.
Cheers

Would that be the same Midland Air Training when a mate and I walked the 20 yards from ATA to inquire about hiring an aircraft were told... "Oh no, we don't do that sort of thing here" after pointing to the brochure which said 'Aircraft hire'?

Hi Nearly Man.
It sure is.......I must say that I am some what surprised by your comments as the CFI is more than happy to hire out his A/C, however he does of course expect potential "hirer's" to accept a Check Ride before allowing any PPL's or CPL's for the matter to go PIC/ Solo.....fair's fair after all.
Cheers C.N.

Did my Perf A with Sandy Thompson (top bloke) back in Feb 2000 and walked out of the exam shed at Gatport Airwick with a smug grin on my face 30 mins before the end of time. Few weeks later the white envelope from the CAA arrived informing me of a first time pass with 100%. Top result for me and most of the guys on the course.
Can't vouch for the nav's and techs - did those with Bristol Groundschool.

Captain Seagull.
I must have been there the same time as you and fully agree although I must have gotten one question wrong!.
The past papers for the Perf A were a real godsend.
Captain, are you now with a company with a silly three letter abbreviation, ie the one wots having a dab at go?. If so,I do know you!

Ahh, that would be it then! Flypuppy had only one arm and one good eye and I only two arms but no legs...I can see his point of view but it was a straight no!...seeing as we waited in the office for someone to turn up for yonks we should have robbed them for their trouble......Coventry monkeys, those muppets made a right racket firing up just as I was coming to a good bit in Air Law (:
