Post Need 50 hours!!

OK, i just need a little bit of advice.. .. .I need to get fifty hours. Ideally in a PA28.. .. .The budget is £3950(GBP).. .Where would you go? ie USA,UKetc.. .. .I have thought about the US but i dont know wether it would be worth it for fifty hours. I can get the hours locally for £3950 but the planes are not always available for touring and have a few INOP stickers dotted here and there! . .. .Any help much is appreciated.. .. .SCROGGS,WWW :- I was a bit unsure wether to post this on Private flying , but i thought, as most of the people in private flying wont be looking to build hours cheap and quick, then this was this was probably the most appropriate forum. I'll let you chaps decide . . . . [ 05 March 2002, 10:26: Message edited by: Rowley ]

Book a flight with travelocity.co.uk or globalholidays.co.uk or cheapestflights.co.uk then contact adp-flight.com they will fix you up with transport, accoms and an airplane at prices you won't believe - don't go looking for new airplanes without inop stickers on though will you! The weather is loads better than the UK and the flying much more enjoyable! Florida is OK if you want to sweat off a few pounds! The trip into McCarran international (Las Vegas) is well worth making as is Santa Barbara and Carson City (Lake Tahoe where the winter olympics were held) Don't forget the FAA conversion licence, you can be flown into Riverside for that as part of your checkout ride.

In the US a PA28 will cost roughly $3400 (~£2300) wet ($67 per hour for block rate) for 50 hrs...

Rowley,. .. .I've been out in Orlando on business for the past month. At the weekends for the hell of it I go and fly a PA28 for $55/hour wet (plus taxes).. .. .So 50 hours will be no more than approx 2200 pounds. Airfare, transport and accomodation will be no more than 800 pounds (probably 600). Plenty of interesting places to go as well. You'll probably see a shuttle launch at the same time.. .. .So you are well within your budget.. .. .Don't know about swetting in Florida - it's bloody freezing here at the moment, but the flying conditions are good to perfect.. .. .I would recommend it.

Rowley,. .I've just spoken to the CFI at our aerodrome in England. You should be able to get a deal for 50 hours on our PA28 (its a nice one) within your budget.. .He suggests you ring him direct. Today you can contact him on 0771 537 1565. . .Would save all the hassle of transatlantic travel.

Yes, ADP is a very organised and friendly set up in a very good location. You should be able to find a flight much cheaper than £360

Rowley, don't mean to jump on your thread but I am also in a similar situation and would like to do a block of 50 hours later this year.. .. .I have considered the Florida/US option but quite fancy the idea of hour building in either Australia or South Africa as an alternative. Has anybody got any recommendations of schools in either of these places and more importantly any horror stories or just general difficulties with hiring aircraft in these regions?. .. .I took a look at adp-flight.com and was a bit disapointed to read that without an instrument rating the aircraft could not be taken more than 350nm from the airfield or for more than 24hour duration. Is this typical of most schools as the idea of building hours whilst touring really appeals?. .. .Any information greatly appreciated.

Rowley,. .. .I've just had a quick look at ADP's website as well. Place seems to be reasonable. But..... .. .I know it states "there are no hidden fees", however as a word of caution/warning - watch out for the 6% US Sales tax (which these organisations tend to leave off - its a bit like VAT, significantly less, but it is still anoying).. .. .Do you know if this is included in the prices quoted? If not assume the worst.

No problems...... .America is not just cheap for flying...... .. .Tell her about the cheap shopping, restaurants and the sandy Californian beaches full of hunky surfers (well that's probably stretching the imagination). . .. .No you have to forget about that grass strip - fly her down to the Las Vegas strip, pass the Grand Canyon and go and see the London Bridge at Lake Havasu !!! Get some real experience in long navigation trips in a more open country. . .. .Plan to enjoy those 50 hours as opposed to flying round in circles in the UK avoiding the weather and paying those outrageous 15 pound landing fees !!!

If you need 50 hours, make the most of it and do it at night. My ATPL is taking forever to unfreeze as I'mshort of the night hours.. .. .(Come to think of it, I've still got a night instructors rating, we should get together on this one! )

Good point about the UK landing fees Quarternion. I forgot to mention that membership of our club at Netherthorpe (EGNF) includes reciprocal free landings at twenty other UK airfields.

OK guys... ADP are great. I've flown there in their twin and archers and all were fine. Not many contain DMEs etc but I have gone across the whole of the southern US in their planes. They have only brought in the regulation about having an IR for going 24 hrs or 350nm recently I think.. .Depending how much experience you have they MAY bend the rules but I'm not sure. Myself and a few other guys might be heading that way again in April or May this year. I for one, I have to get 240 hrs before June to unfreeze my ATPL so I will be looking for 50 - 100 hours out there.. .I have been scouring the net for cheaper but the only one I found was in Debenair in FL. They were cheap for a c152 but their fuel payback was only $1.50 compared to ADP at $2.00 per gal. Believe me that will make a big difference over 50 hours!. .Drop me a line with your experience and info on when you are going then we can see about joining forces with a bunch of guys and do a trip!!. ASI, email sent.. .I recommend Aerospace Aviation at Bankstown (Sydney). Good instructors and fair prices, believe me, that is what you want.

Have a look at South Africa. You do have to get a SA PPL, (air law exam and flight test), but the Rand being 15 to the pound at the moment makes a C172 about £30 an hour.

Don't go to Sydney - the weather is not totally reliable - I was due to fly from Bankstown in November, but the weather was total pants. A friend has just returned from there, and the weather is changeable at the moment. If you go to OZ, you should go West or North to get better weather. . .. .LA weather is a bit dodgy at this time of year, but should be OK in April onwards. . .. .Some mixed reports regarding ADP. Search the archives for more. I flew from Long Beach, CA. Not bad. Nice aircraft. ****** all to do if you don't have a car. . .. .Oz is a bit safer for the GF. . .. .Rand is currently 16 to the pound.
