Some airline clues please!

I am currently flying helo in this mans army and really need a change. Therefore, I am seriously considering doing my licences and pursuing a career in the airlines.
Before I bombard you with licensing queries I would just like to get the low down on life as an airline pilot.
Could anyone give me an idea of what the work regime is like, i.e. time away, hours flown, starting wages, what the boss is like and how your career progresses. I appreciate that this is a very broad question but I would greatly appreciate any hints, tips and help.
I also understand that it is very difficult to get started in this type of job and I am not taking anything for granted, but nothing ventured nothing gained!
Thanks for your time.

As you say, "a very broad question...," it all depends on which airline you end up flying for, whether freighting or pax carrying, whether air taxi, regional carrier, schedul or charter.
The pay can be very good , if you manage to get onto jets straight away, or a down right **** take if you end up working for a small turbo prop operator. In that case if you are thinking of a career change try becoming a train driver because, & I kid you not, you can potentially earn anything up to £14,000 per annum more!
Best of luck with whatever you decide to do.

If I had about 4 hours sat down in front of a few beers I might just get a chance at answering a few of your questions , if you email me with where you would like to be based , what type of flying you would like to do and how meny fixed wing hours you have.

Regards A and C.
