Wink Are we Mad?!?

I have come to the conculsion that we are all mad!! Think about it. Most of the people here seem to be in good jobs that don't pay too bad, some after many years in school and a lot of hard work. But we are still are not happy. We want to give it all up, work very hard studying for our APTL CPL/IR.... and pay a fortune(that we don't have) for the Privilege. And then after that we will be very happy to take a flying job that pays lessand longer hours than we are on now...and we love doing it.

So in closing......your mad....I'm mad...were all mad.

Isn't it great!

Cool

You are correct. Totally out to lunch!

The entire airline industry is subsidised by the determination, commitment and bank balances of us wannabe pilots. Was that too radical to publish?

Scandalous use of individuals desire to pursue an occupation. That is the only reason it survives. If this was the HGV industry, there would be very few lorries on the road.

Has anyone raised the profile of this and taken the authorities to task? If so, what was the outcome, and if not, why not?

How many careers can the average person get where they get to do what they really love in an industry where they work on average 150 hours a month and get on average £60 000.

;-) Bloody brilliant I say!

P_S,

This subject has been raised many times with politicians but the relatively small number of votes that it would get mean that it will never really make it on to any political agenda. (am I being too cynical?)

For whatever reason, the public perception of pilots is of brycreem boys tally ho-ing off into the wide blue yonder with hot and cold running hosties at our beck and call. You and I know the reality involves re-mortgaging our homes and risking divorce in the process to spend 6 months studying for pointless exams followed by the JAA equivalent of trying to wallpaper a room blindfolded, with one arm tied behind our backs while standing on 2 legged stool.

The general public do not, in general, understand what goes into making an airline pilot. The assumtion is that they are all ex-RAF or sponsored by BA. Sadly, from what I can gather, many politico's share this idea. The reality is that airlines are likely to look to other ways of sourcing pilots than to start training those of us with the deep desire to become airline pilots. You just need to look at the flagging out debate for evidence of that.

You sound like the right person to raise the issue with the authorities - I'm right behind you all the way!

Hi,

Maybe we could form some kind of working group or task force to take this issue of "wannabe abuse" to the authorities. I'd be more than happy to be a part of it.

I'm personally sick to death of seeing so many peoples dreams destroyed by disgusting treatment from flight training organisations, airlines etc.

This thread might add something to the discussion:

Towards the end of the thread is this little nugget,
<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" size="2">As an aside. Someone kindly sent me a copy of an article in Air Pictorial dated 1956
This went on at great length about how unfair it was that young pilots had to pay £1600 - £2000 to obtain a license when doctors etc were subsidized.
The last sentence read 'Plainly matters cannot be left where they at present stand'

Well, here we are 44 yrs on!!!!

I take your point but I still miss the money I`ve lost since I left the I.T./digital comms industry.
So much harder to work from home as a pilot too.
Still mustn`t grumble, don`t miss 100 hours per month of C++ though.

Well, I don't WANT to earn 60,000 a year. I don't WANT shiny brasses on my uniform and scrambled egg on my sleeve. OR a multi-crew turbine engines aircraft.

If there is a way I can fly for a living I'll do it 12 hours a day butt naked if I have too. In the cold. For nearly no money, if need be.

Well, not quite. But I don't want to be an airline pilot. Air-Taxi or survey would suit me fine, post, medical supplies, any time any where. Still can't afford a licence, though*. Still, I guess they take these attitudes for a good reason. Annoying as it is.

*Mortgage no, Finance possibly yes. How far can I get on a CPL? How much does one cost?

I would be interested in helping put the wannabe views across to the politicians. If anyone wants to join myself and Loony_Pilot please post further comments below.

Thumbs up

I must be honest and say that mounting a broadside with the authorities is something that I'm considering. The trick is to find a way to get the message over to somebody in authority in such a way that they will see it as scandalous, and understand sypatheticaly what people go through for a career. Particularily with the current party in power, anything that is seen to be elitist should recieve a hearing from those trying to remove the elitist element from it. All union type bodies so far have either failed to do so or have not tried to make representation. Naturaly the larger the numbers involved the more chance there is of getting a voice heard.

In this day of easy communication and with the ease of setting up IT style communications one is in a better position than ever to gather the numbers up. Remember last years fuel protests? I rest my case on that one.

My bigest beef is the way that rules and regs seem to change continuously. I liken it to someone embarking on becomming a dentist. The candidate is told that the requirement is 3 years study and 3 years practical to qualify. Now, would there be an outrage if after doing all that he/she's told the rules have changed and now you are required to do x and y as well? And pay for it? If they where in charge of a football match, by half time no one would know which way to kick.

Count me in.

PS

Wink

Perhaps we should book a demonstration in the next May day protests for disgruntled and broke wannabe's.

Perhaps I should land a light aircraft on the front garden of the palace and hand deliver a note to the Queen asking for some funding!! Anyone coming?

We are mad, certainly. But we're in good company. Artists, writers, actors, musicians, outdoor activities instructors, farmers, vets - these are just some of the people who often do what they do for the love of it, not the money.

Yeah - except that farmers, vets, writers, musicians etc. study at universities and colleges funded by the government.
