Age and getting a FO position??
Hi,
Just wondered if there is anyone on pprune who is 19-20 and is a FO?
Another thing is that if an airline was looking for a FO and both had exactly the same experience flying wise say 250-300 hours, who would they take if one was 20 and the other say 32?

As an example, in the latest Britannia criteria :
Under 30, U only need 200TT to apply.
Over 30, U need 1500TT.
& yes there are 767 Captains who are under 30. The youngest I've seen so far is 27 & works for Lauda Air.

Thats interesting, so i guess being younger can have its advantages then?
How many years roughly does it take to get from FO to Captain with someone like Britannia?

I think all the youth 'thing' is (in most cases- perhaps not all) a load of bollox!
At the school I am at you constantly hear all the chat about why the 30 somethings stand a better chance at the airline game than a young gun 21 year old like myself. The amounts of times I have had to bite my lip when i have heard someone say...'well no offence or anything.. you're only young aren't you, and airlines these days would rather take on some one a little older someone like me who's lived a little and has life experience!!!' CRAP!!! Or is it?!!! I have always thought and got the general impression that as long as your face fits, you have the licence, and can make an MD or a chief pilot realise you'll be an asset to the company then you stand as good a chance as any? Helped only if you've been brown nosing and forging contacts etc. Can anybody correct me or back me up as I'm sure all of us graduating with a frozen CPL IR and minimal hours will stand an equal chance?.....

I struggled at 19 to get my first commercial job ,I think a lot of companies thought that was too young , but as I hit 20 got interviewed and subsequently first T/P job. Then on the 757 / 767 at the age of 22.
Basically I found that my age helped ! I haven't had it confirmed yet though !!

I was lucky to get my first Turboprop job a week after my 21st birthday. I flew it for a year and was lucky again to get my present job on the B757-200/300 at 22. I am now 23, (as of 2 days ago. ) The key thing I think is maturity. You can be in your 30's but not as mature as someone in their 20's. I felt no ageism towards myself at all. The other guys on my course, some were in their 40's.

OK So where do I stand. Ozzy , 39yrs old 700 TT, degree in aviation, ME IR.Have worked in an airline for 7 years (not flying unfortunately)
How do I get these jobs. From the posts I have been reading they sound as if they are crying out for guys like me.
Problem is converting the damn licence to the CAA equivalent. Any ideas?

To join Air France, the Total Time required depends on your age. Here's the latest scale :
If U were born :
- in January 1969 or after : no minimum (French ME CPL-IR will do)
- between Jan 65 & Dec 68 : 1000+
- between Jan 63 & Dec 64 : 2000+
- between Jan 60 & Dec 62 : 3000+
- between Jan 56 & Dec 59 : 3500+
However, these minima may B lowered (@ HR's discretion, I understand) if U hold a TR on one of the "entry class" aircrafts (A320 or B737).

Hey all, thanks for replying, however now I am in two minds as to what to do. I am 19 at the moment and am about to start my ATPL's. I have 160 hours total with my PPL, so straight after my ground school will be looking at progressing to my CPL, but then i don't know whether to risk it and do my IR and start applying, or to get my FI and look for a job instructing for a bit. With the replies so far it looks as though being young can help, any opinions or suggestions?
