Cool CPL Hidden costs...

In an attempt to come up with a realistic plan, I am attempting to estimate the cost for me to obtain a multi engine JAA CPL in the UK.

My problem is that quotes of £4000 - £6000 are generally for just 25 hrs flying. What are all the other extra that I will need?

Here are those I can think of. Have I missed any?

170 A £70
1st class medical £400
CPL CAA test fee £564
CPL issue fee £178
ME issue fee £128
ATPL theory exam £718
Theory material £? (£1500?

Bloody well adds up doesn't it!

All of those costs are true but also figure in a £2000 contingency for 3 reasons...

1) if you get a partial pass it's another £375 to have the retest + a/c hire

2) if you fail then it's £560 + a/c hire for full test duration

3) chances are you will go over the 25hr requirement and these complex singles / twins are V. Expensive!!

Also the writtens WILL NOT GO TO PLAN!! bank on taking at least 4 resits at £35 per go plus the consolidation courses at the distance learning school (you'd be a fool to take the exams without these 2 week refreshers!!)

Hope this helps, e-mail me if you need more details. I've just done my CPL/IR and even with £8.5K sponsorship it still cost me £23K and I only went over my course hours by 5 in the CPL and 5 in the IR!!

Dont forget you airways and landing fees!
Id be suprised if these have been included in the flight time quote.

Your post implies that you don't already have a MEP Class Rating, in which case you need to do a minimum of 28 hours flying training.

You can save yourself £128 though, the CAA have got a buy one get one free offer on at the moment - you get a free class rating with CPL issue.

Don't forget that there is a requirement to have a night qualification as well.

And £70 for a 170A - considering that there is no longer a flight test, I would expect that to be thrown in with the course.

kb,
Can U tell us in which school U did your CPL training ? Cos' if they charged airway fees, these crooks deserve to B named here ! Nr 1 there's no airway fee for light training a/cs, & nr 2 U don't fly airways during CPL training.

Dude,
Do U want to do your CPL checkride in a complex SE (& then do the 6h ME rating course), or directly in a ME ? IMHO the best is to do the latter, as it will reduce the training cost significantly.

Thanks for the comments all.

I already have the night rating and 25 hrs on complex singles so I would probably go staright for the CPL on amulti. I forgot it was a 28 hr course though.
The only prob with doing it on a multi must be that any resits involve hiring a multi at about £300 hr!!

Box Jockey: did that £31.5K include a PPL or just the CPL / iR? Surely that was ab initio?

So in conclusion, for a 175hr PPL to get a CPL you need £10K even though the course is about £5000.
Is there the same kind of mark up involved with the IR? Ie. course costs approx £10K - plus £5K extras?!

£300 for a multi ?? Where ? In crooksland maybe (another name for the OATS-Crabair circus company). I can name @ least 5 UK schools where the hourly rate for ME training is @ or below £250.

My course commenced with me already at 180hrs with IMC and night with 100+hrs P1. I did the CPL in the complex s/e as they deemed the multi cpl to be too challenging (my arse). what I got for my £31.5K is as follows:

full residential ground school at PPSC
JAR exam fees plus 2 resits @£35 each
30hrs complex s/e (inc 5 sim)
cpl test fee
7.25hrs multi (MEP rating)
55hrs multi (inc 20 in sim)
IR test fee
approach fees and landing fees
CPL/IR license issue

FYI you need an MEP rating prior to the IR course hence I had to do the PPL MEP course (extra £2200 as I was forced to use a certain flying club as part of my sponsorship!!)

It's a killer but at least I have a job waiting it's just a question of waiting for my course now!!
