ME/IR renewal time
Looks like that time is coming and I was wondering if anyone can recommend a reasonably priced place to get the ratings renewed. I'm in the midlands but a drive down to London for the weekend isn't out of the question.
I read a few previous posts and I was planning on doing the renewal in the air so I can get the ME renewed as well, although I'm open to suggestions. Also, my ME expires before my IR and I was thinking of letting it lapse and renewing them both at the same time in a couple of months.
Any downside to this, seeing as I can't see myself doing too many 250 quid/hour joyrides in the next little while?

Spiral Dive,
If you want cheap aircraft, you might be better heading North than South. The two schools at Leeds and two schools at Humberside have a variety of twins for hire and IRRE's available.
On the MEP / IR lapsing front, I did exactly that this year - let my MEP lapse, then did the ME IR renewal and MEP revalidation together which now has brought them into sync for future years. I had no hassle with this, indeed I was advised by an IRRE that this was the most economic option - I think the test is basically the same unless you let the MEP lapse for years.
Good luck!
foggy.

I am in the same position, saving my Sheckles up for a MEP/IR renewal. Anyone know of a cheap twin and an IRE in the Warwickshire area? Seems all the cheap twins from Cov and Wellesbourne have moved on over the years.
Any pointers gratefully welcomed.

Hi
Try IRRenewal.com
I am in the process of doing my renewal with them, seems pretty good on price as well.
(ps in the interest of fairness.. I must point out I instruct at the school that owns the twins that IRRenewal.com use!)

Thanks for the advice lads, I was thinking it might be nice to get the two renewals in sync as foghorn mentioned, although I don't even want to really contemplate no job and having to do it again next year!
Plus it'll buy a bit of time to save up the cash without having to go too far into debt.
As far as IRRenewal, I saw them advertising here before, and have checked out the site, but as they're in the southeast might end up not being all that economical.
Cheers,

IR Renewal
I have just renewed my ME/IR after it had lapsed for 6 months.
Arranged a day with one of the civvie examiners(£170 per day) from Babcock-HCS, the company who has the military training contract at RAF Barkston Heath. He can arrange a twin (seneca or duchess). I did mine in the Duchess based at Peterborough Conington(£ 175/hr).
Did an If training flight in the morning, airways- cranfield-single eng NDB holds-ILS-1 eng NDB app- circle to land-GH-limited panel-
Up's-circuits. Did a debrief, then did the same thing for the test only this time don't screw up. All in all I did 4 hrs flying and was quite surprised how most of it came back to me, although my scan wasn't worth a damn for the first hour. Sting in the tail was the £ 130 approach/landing charges.
After it all I was quite happy with the cost as it could have been a lot worse and I've got another 4 twin hours

healyg,
Mike Boulton actually advertises on Pprune so I have no problem giving out his website.......
http://www.simulatortrainingservices.co.uk
He offers a wonderful two day service for those working on a fixed time schedule, however you can only renew your IR in the sim and not the ME.
Mutt.

Cost of Renewal
Wherever you go, make sure you ask beforehand what charges to expect for approaches and landings/circuits. At a lot of places even based operators pay per T&G. What seems a reasonable rate for an aircraft (like a Seneca I) can soon become expensive.

You could try Stapleford Flight Centre who have an excellent FNPT2 simulator which is approved for IR renewals at about 1/2 the cost of a twin. usual deal is 1 or 2 trips to get back up to standard then the test so about 4 hours sim in total
