How did you manage?

I am aged 18 and im wondering if there is anyone on this forum who is saving up to gain their full commercial license who is also 18 (or there abouts) or someone who started to save up around this age?
Ifso what sort of job can i get into in order to save for my license (either in aviation or out).
The thing is that i only earn 10K per year now and looking at the jobs which i have looked into which pay around 20K, you need to be 21+ minimum.
I was wondering if basically someone can tell me where the money is at my age?!?
But seriously i'm snookered at the moment.

I have A-levels but i dont wish to get a degree.
Is there any job which i can put my a-levels to good use which would pay much better than my current wage?
Or is there some sort of a short training course which i can go on to earn more E.G. HGV class C1, welding certificate etc?

I have A-levels and didn't want a degree; I worked for investment banks to get some good money behind me...however, you will have to work very hard and for very long hours and be quite career minded. It's not a great market out there right now though!

I think you should get out there and have fun, go travel, get laid and come back to us when your 25 to 30 so you don't end up a 'where did my young life go middle aged proffessional type'
and while your at it may be get a cheap PPL maybe AUS. CPL,
(at your age you can get a visa no trouble)
and go chase sheep around the out-back in a Airvan or a chopper.
Your 18 for god's sake the world is yours!
Then you'll be ready for a career as a airline pilot, get married etc.
Take it from me unless you have a rich dad or get on a full airline training 'gig' you'll spend the next 5 years being 'billy no mates' just saveing and studying the before you know it you'll be 40!

Entirely up to you of course liquidhockey but whilst I was working, there were a number of wannabe's with the same idea working hard for the cash...I can see David Balchin's point; it's very important not to get bogged down in a career and forgetting to live but at the same time if, like me, you're not wealthy you're gonna need the dollars from somewhere.
Then you'll be ready for a career as a airline pilot, get married etc.
P.S. The money I earned from banking allowed me to travel widely too!

Its a hard life out there. You won't get it put on a plate unless you have rich parents.....
You have time on your side and that is your big advantage. Us it and enjoy life cause in the end its too short.
The world will still be rotating in 5 years time by which you may have moved forward in your current work.
Are you in aviation? Is so what field? Have you thought of a job in ops or dispatch so you can begin to learn some terminology etc. There are plenty of jobs about and it could give you better contacts.
Use any contact you have and you may get lucky.

I am a Baggage handler.
I have considered dispatch/Ops but as far as i am aware and i might be wrong but they get paid the same as myself, a measly £4.70 per hour!
I have met contacts and have learnt a lot but i am looking for a better earning job in the light of pay and of contacts etc.

you could try playing your hand at the stock market. though, its high risk generally it does have better returns than a high interest savings account generally.
BA shares are a quid each at the moment, and with profits showing within the company, come April I'm thinking they might just bring me some extra cash!!

liquidhockey, buy the evening standard on mondays. they publish an additional paper 'Just the Job'.
there are usually jobs available with high salery, and they requre u to have A-Levels.

That figure is not always right and do you have to stay in MAN.
Why not go abroad or look at other airports in UK.
If you want it badly enough, you will do it.

Basically without a degree you are snookered.
I have a degree in Pharmacy and companies are always trippin over each other to give me work. I work self employed and cover days off, holidays etc in chemist shops.
What I do is put in the hours for 6 weeks at a time then can spend a month in the states flying around or getting the next module. I'm not going to brag about the rate of pay but 4 figure weekly pay packets are what I pick up for around 50 hours work.
It is also great to have a backup plan when there is a down turn in the industry, and I am ideally placed.
My advice is get a degree in a health care field, there are always shortages in well trained people, then the world is your lobster. And don't think of uni as being all about study, 25% of it is study the rest is learning how to live and party and meet people from every corner of the world, it really is a hoot.
The rest mate, is up to you!!!!!
