MEIR Validity for first Type Rating

I have seen a few clouded responses on this from searching so looking for a bit more clarity.
What is the deal with with regard to my first type rating, from what I can see my MEIR needs to be valid to start the TR however my MEP class rating can be lapsed?

Does the validity need to be valid throughout the TR and for the LST/licence issue?

This is for UK CAA if that helps!

FCL.720.A
(a) [...]
(b) Applicants for the issue of the first type rating for a multi-pilot aeroplane shall be student pilots currently undergoing training on an MPL training course or shall, before starting the type rating training course, comply with the following requirements:
[...]
(2) hold or have held a multi-engine IR(A);
[...]
From an FCL point of view, neither your IR or MEP need to be current. The operator may impose other requirements.
