Visa type for type rating in the US?

Hello everyone, I am about doing an initial type rating in the US. It could be at CAE Dallas or Allianz training Dallas. I already have a valid B1/2 visa. I don't know if that is okay, or do I need an M1 visa. The training duration is about 22days.

Depends on what the training provider tells you: I did the initial type rating for the Global at CAE Dallas back in 2013 under a B-1 visa, however when I underwent an upgrade recurrent in 2016 Bombardier Dallas all of a sudden insisted on an M-1 visa.

A type rating training course should not be done under a B-class visitor visa. This point was clarified some years ago by the US DOJ in the memo copied below. Instead use an M-1 visa. In some circumstances a course of study may be pursued while admitted under a different visa class. See SEVP table in the document Nonimmigrants: Who Can Study?

PDF copy of the memo.
