ATPL Theory extension of deadline (uk caa)

Hello all,

I completed my first ATPL exam in December 2019 which would normally lead to a date of June 2021 by which all 14 must be completed. I am aware of ORS 1425 and ORS 1464 but am struggling to understand the context and what it means to me at this point. Seemingly ORS 1425 extended my deadline by a further 6 months (to December 2021) but needed to be applied for, which I did not do. This ORS has now expired and replaced by ORS 1464 and I am unclear if this allows me any extension. I can't really understand the text to be honest and any guidance as to whether I am eligible for a deadline extension ( and if so, is it automatic or require application to the CAA). OR, as I suspect have I missed the boat and need to get a wiggle on, or have I totally misunderstood the meaning of both ORSes completely?

Any advice greatly appreciated,

Hi Beethoven,

I am just finishing ATPL exams and was also unsure about how the various extensions applied to me. I emailed FCL exams and said something along the lines of “I understand extension X means that I have until date Y to complete my exams. Please confirm this is correct”. They replied confirming, so I knew exactly where I stood and had it in writing straight from the horse’s mouth.

I hope that helps and good luck with the exams.

If you don't do the work you won't pass the exams

Thanks SuperMatt, I think I'll do what you say and drop a line to the CAA. Good luck with yours too.

You should be covered by this extension in ORS4 No.1488 (21 Apr 2021).

Ignore the spurious reference to FCL.740(a).

Para 5 probably doesn't apply to you.

UK General Exemption E 5430

4. The Civil Aviation Authority, pursuant to Article 71(1) of UK
Regulation (EU) 2018/1139, exempts pilots under training for the issue
of a UK Part-FCL licence from the requirements of Annex 1, FCL.740(a),
of UK Regulation (EU) No. 1178/2011 applicable to individuals
completing examinations or training, subject to the conditions
specified below.

b. All theoretical knowledge examinations candidates under
FCL.025(b)(2) where the candidate examinations were affected by
COVID-19 between 19 March 2020 and 31 May 2021, and whose examination
are due to expire in the month as shown in the table Annex 1 under
original completion month are granted additional time as shown in the
table Annex 1.

5. Applicants for a licence, rating or certificate benefiting from
this exemption shall receive further training determined by the DTO or
the ATO based on the needs of the applicant. Any such further training
shall be recorded in the applicant’s training record.

Annex 1

[Original completion month June 2021 -> New completion month December 2021]
