Converting FAA to JAA licence.
A met of mine holds an FAA CPL/IR and would like to convert to UK/JAA CPL or ATPL. Does anyone have direct experience of doing this? He is looking for UK based training (we don't offer that kind of thing here anyway) and would like a rough idea of what he can expect to do.
I could trawl through all the JAR/FCL stuff to find the answer but i thought first hand info of the prcticalities may be more help to start.

There is no direct conversion from FAA to JAA licence unless that person has more than 1500 MCC time.
To convert his FAA CPL-IR to JAA CPL-IR, he will have to pass either CPL or ATPL exams. He will also be required to take a CPL and IR course. I am under the old system and even under the old system I was required to pass all the written exams. The only benefits I get is that I dont have to take the full CPL or IR course as long as I finish everything before June next year.

I may have got the wrong of the stick but and probably have but,
I was talking to at 747 captain of Atlas who flies from stansted. He said he was approached by one of the UK based airlines because he is also a TRE. He would have had to convert his license but apparantly there is a quick route via ireland.
Something about Ireland having some kind of grandfather rights and only needing to do the HPL exam..... Even if this is wrong its worth looking into.

First he must have passed either JAA CPL or ATPL written exams and hold a CAA class 1 medical. For the CPL he needs minimum 5 hours complex, training as decided by the school and then 170a followed by full CPL skill test. Unfortunatley he has to do the full IR course.
