Training for IR.

What is the best app for the iPad to IR. NDB tracking etc. Or alternatively tool for a MacBook.

I'm aware of RANT, but I've a Mac. So I don't think it will work, unfortunately.

Thanks folks!

I bought an app, and it was terrible.

Is this one good? I'm mainly interested in the ADF/NDB element.

VOR tracker is a brilliant app, ndb tracking, holds, intercepts, VOR holds and tracking etc, RMI and HSI available in it too.

Luiz monteiro website is brilliant too,

To complement the above, don't forget about 'armchair flying'. Sit down quietly and run through emergencies and procedures in your head. Think through typical flights and what you are going to do and when eg frequency changes, RT calls, tracks, hold procedures, asym drills. You don't want to be learning this in the air at nearly £10/min.

^^^ What he said. Chair flying is the best training you can do, and it's free. Think of it as an actor learning lines. So much of flying is scans, flows and memory items it needs to be second nature.

With regards to apps - if you are doing an IR course, you'll have a competent instructor and probably more hours in the SIM than you need. To put it into context, I flew VFR for my first 1500 hours, and I ABSOLUTELY KNEW that IFR flying was a black art, the hardest thing you can do, and that I would be all the help I could get. So I bought a brand new top spec gaming PC, X plane, yoke and pedals. Imagine my disbelief after about 6 hours in the SIM, my instructor told me that we had covered everything I needed to know and the rest is just practice! He was complaining because the course was just too long. I still haven't taken that PC out of the box. So trust me, unless you're spreading the IR over a year, the SIM time should be enough.

I use VOR Tracker and its a great app to build confidence with the the IR examinations and lessons. Although, yes, armchair flying is always good, but this app allows you to see it 'in action' and give you the confidence in your ability to get the basics of holds and entries etc right
