You are aware that that is a breach of copyright?? - and that pprune towers & co. don't like it??
Most of the decent pilot shops have original copies that they would like to sell - and they are legal.

I was unaware that this was frowned upon. One well-known moderator has himself posted in another thread:
"Its a very good program, its better than the Flightsim option, but at £90 its a bit steep.
The old version Rant 6.0 is quite good and there are, ahem, a few copies floating around...
2000 is a good investment as long as you sell it on when you have finished with it for say £45. Which shouldn't be too hard."
By the way I will be buying the latest version if I do not get any offers of the older versions. At the full price.

The obvious problem with selling second-hand software is that, if you 'accidently' leave a copy of the program on your hard drive when you sell the CD you or the new owner of the CD are certainly in breach of copyright. Some software's terms and conditions state that, by breaking the seal, you become the sole licencee and that the licence is not transferrable.

I thought that the majority of software wont work anyway if the original disc is not present in the drive.
So, if anyone out there has a copy, I'm still looking...

That well known moderator could well have been me.
I could never condone any breach of copyright or contract. I believe that in some cases it is possible to sell a piece of software without being in breach of any contract.
RANT is a good program.
It is well worth purchasing in my opinion as a flying instructor.

You may be lucky and find someone out there who is looking for a safe place to keep their backup disk but this public forum probably isn't the place to look.
There may or may not be several people out there looking to get rid of a copy that is surpless to requirements but put yourself in their situation, you could be a representative of Odd Soft who is trying to find a source of ilegal copies. It's not inconceivable is it.
The version of RANT that I have can be used without the disk but despite the fact that I still think the £89 quid it cost me is extortionate I for one would not pass it on for the reasons previously mentioned.

I have used RANT 2000 for a couple of years now. It is a very good program indeed.
I consider the £90 retail price excellent value when you consider the quality of the package and the money you will save on 'blind flying' in a/c as a result of being more familiar with the nav aids.
ALSO (and most important!)
By purchasing the original you will be helping the developers of the product to STAY IN BUSINESS ! and in turn be able to develop the product further and provide back up and support for all the legitimate users.
Go and buy a genuine version, you know it makes sense

I find this much easier to use than the on-disk help index that is all you get with RANT 2000. I still refer to my 3.1 instruction book to find out how to do things with RANT 2000. If Oddsoft are at the Flight Training Exhibition they usually have an offer which is about £10 off. Thats how I bought my copies. The only way to know for sure if one is permitted to transfer the license to the software (_any_ software) is to read the license agreement. Many packages indeed specify that it is perfectly legitimate to do so provided certain conditions are met, which typically include no retention of copies of the software or documentation, and that the subsequent licensee agrees to the terms of the original license.

RANT is never worth £90 !!! - Unless your loaded.
Buy FS2002 Std Edition for £25 instead.
Choose a plane, take off (you can't do that in RANT), turn on the AP and set Alt hold, and Air Speed hold and then do all the things you do in RANT, but with more realism.
I found it far more useful to fly the King Air out of Oxford via the airways to Bristol, Birmingham, or EMA etc and do some holds and approaches, with FS2002 than RANT.
BTW I have a FS2002 patch that puts the DME into Oxford that was left out, if anyone wants it.

I've decided to 'go public' on PPRuNE just to say thankyou to those who are defending my copyright on this thread and the other RANT thread that is now locked. I understand the moans about the cost of RANT; however, the pilot training market is relatively small compared with the games market and so the demand for the program is limited. A reduction in price might sell a few more copies but, given the mark-up already charged by retailers, we'd not see much more dosh. Even at £89.90 per copy my business partner and I will never be able to give up the day-jobs! RANT profits keep us in new computer toys and not much else - we both do it because it's more interesting than stamp collecting and costs less than golf.

Given the overall cost of obtaining a multi. instrument rating, £90 is a small price to pay considering the training benefit you can get from RANT. The same sum of money will buy you approximately 15 minutes of instruction in one of Oxford's Senecas!
