How do you convert a CAA PPL into a JAA PPL?

Hold 75 hours on aeroplanes.
Demonstrate the use of radio aids to any Chief Flying Instructor.
And then once you've got your JAR PPL you have to renew it every 5 years (around £100 a time). As far as I can see, there's absolutely no benefit in swapping licences unless you plan to fly from Europe.
