FAA ATPL Course Requirement

I'm curious (since I can't find anything on the web), where pilots are getting the new ATPL coursework done and who's paying for it? Everything I've read suggests the cost would be upwards of $10k, especially with the simulator requirements. It's been 4 months. What are people running into?
