Times report on the Friends Reunited website criticism case (ex-teacher,won v ex-pupil, lost) means that you and PPRuNe are personally liable for damages and costs, if you post anything untrue and damaging.
This landmark case means beware of posting or emailing anything detrimental about an individual instructor, specific school or any airline.
You may believe you can justify your statements but remember that you can't get legal aid for libel and your target may have plenty of money and could easily bankrupt you, as you could not now risk going to court.

I agree.
I can't remember who it is - but there is one member of pprune who - every time they read a good report about a Florida flying school, they post a message suggesting that the report is a set up...or has been posted by the marketing department of the school...or some other remark that some may take as being libelous.
They really ought to be careful - in case somebody takes them to Court.

Why should PPRuNe worry? The result of this case is that the individual concerned is responsible - a good thing, in my humble opinion.
FriendsReunited pulled the comments once a complaint was made and were not taken to court (note the difference from the Demon Internet case of a few years ago - Demon did not remove defamatory comments on newsgroups they hosted once requested to do so). Presumably PPRuNe must just assist in deleting disputed comments and take reasonable steps to identify the sender (i.e. IP address and registration details) when and if requested?

If anyone wishes to make a contentious post about any individual or organisation, we insist that they identify themselves to the Pprune staff so that any subsequent action can be directed to the correct individual. If we feel that a thread is getting close to being actionable (or just rude and unacceptable), we will pull it and warn the offenders about their behaviour. We may also withold their posting rights or, in extremis, ban them from Pprune.
Remember, free speech carries responsibilities and liabilities. We won't let Pprune be put at risk by intemperate idiots.
