License conversion

Hi, my name is Emmanuel. A citizen if Nigeria. I am about to start my integrated Atpl with 43air school in south Africa. I just came to realize that after acquiring my frozen atpl license, I won't be able to fly aircraft that are registered in Europe back in my country Nigeria. So I will like to know the steps in converting my South African frozen atpl to EASA frozen atpl? Also I know this question is lame, but will I have an entirely different license after my conversion to easa? Also if I will have a different license, what happens to my South African license?
I will really appreciate it if my questions can be answered.
Thanks.

Hi and welcome to the forum!

The term "conversion" is deceptive, at least when we are talking about the conversion of a pilot license, there is no such thing like a "conversion". In general it refers to the process of acquiring a license of a specific country by a pilot who already holds a license issued by another country, which is not accepted by the other country - for what reason ever.

Don't know why you concern yourself with converting a license which you apparently don't even have yet?! I'd suggest get your SA license first and then see what doors will open? Besides, without having an EU passport or residence/work permit it's pretty much pointless to go for the EASA conversion (which is a pain itself), no EU airline nor operator will hire you!

If it's about getting an EASA license in general, I'd suggest get the EASA license first and then convert it into the license of whatever country, which is most likely the far simpler approach than the other way around! Which does not mean that going through EASA training is simple, rather the opposite is the case. In terms of money, training in EU is probably more expensive then in SA - I'd assume so. The least expensive country in EU to get an EASA/JAA license is probably Poland.

Anyway, best wishes and good luck!
