positive insight for job seekers
Hey guys,
At last a little luck coming my way.
Last october I sent C.V to all English/French/Spanish countries and some others where I thought they had english cokpit.
At the time I thought it was quite expensive and useless,specially for african countries where either you need to visit or be recommended but I did not want to regret later not to have done it.
In the mean time I went to Ivory coast and almost got a job there and I have kept good contact with a small operator in Morroco. Morroco seems to work out (they are asking my licence validation out there) but I was not 100% sure about it, so i start studying the possibilities of doing aerial work setting up my own business, which was starting to take shape, it was to do sightseeing tours in C172/182 for tourist during the summer season over Biarritz .I was as well about to get a contract for ocean surveillance to point out rubbish to a piking boat during the summer. But that was all single engine piston.
While I was waiting for some authorisation from the french and spanish DGAC, I decided to go to London to visit my girlfriend.
Then I got a phone call on Saturday morning :
-Hi, may i speak to Xabi.
-Xabi speaking
-we have received a resume(which one ? I sent 2000 of them..) do you still want to work in africa
-well, off course
-It would be to fly Let410,bi turboprop a/c,£700 a month,boarding,60/80h a month, based in Bamako, Mali
-when can you come ?
-well tommorow, the day after tommorow
-that’s good
-How about the type rating ?
-well, normally it is done in tcheck republic but we need someone right away so you’ll learn while flying, anyway the planes are registered in Togo so we’ll issue you with a togolese licence
-(I guess with a a Let410 type rating on it somehow???)
Well, that’s the most of it, I will be off tomorow for hot and polluted Bamako, for my first flying job ever with I believe little training before hand, I may even be already schedule to fly on Friday for all I know ! ! ! !
I’ve heard accomodation is pretty bad and the boss has bad reputation, but at least he pays.
He already hung up on me.I’ve been waiting for my entry visa since Monday. I'm flying out on Thursday but I had to go on Wednesday morning from my home town, and still no visa so i had to call him at 6.30am (Mali time) :
-I’m sorry to disturb you sir but…
-YES you are disturbing….
-Well, I’m about to….
-I’M NOT AT YOUR SERVICE
and he hung up on me
That’s a good start with my future boss, isn’t it ? ? ?
But,HEY, it is my first flying job with only 400h after an almost one year wait and it is gonna be on a turboprop.
And, do I have any choice at the moment?????
And by the way he said he would give me the money back for my ticket, I was ready to pay for it myself (just don't anybody here tells him OK....)
Don't give up or it is gonna give more opportunities to the ones who keep on trying.

Good for you. Keep us posted and read your e-mail from me. You are one lucky Son of a gun and I hope it all works out for you. I have done my share of Africa jobhunting and I can say it is not easy and it is not cheap, so you should be happy. If they need more hands on deck then give me a shout.

but I guess you have to speak Icelandic (or do you have a special name for the language) to be able to work there.
could you please send me those african experiences too (fresh out of the academy so I`ll have to do a lot of writing too to get dry behind my ears and get the shine rubbed off).
Is it worth it to start learning icelandic or should I first concentrate on German (as lufthansa seems to do pretty good), what does Icelandic sound like by the way (I speak dutch, french and english).
