What is oxford aviation playing at?????
I was just reading about the new course that oxford are about to offer airline partner pilot training and can only ask what they are playing at. The £65000 they are asking for the course means that we are again looking at the situation where only rich kids become pilots. Obviously airlines such as BMI and British European, will in turn offer less bursaries as they look to save money by taking on those who are paying for most of their training. Ok ok it is good,fantastic for the lucky few with platinum spoons in their mouths but not for the majority of the rest. Its not a good time to be a wannabe....

£65k?!? Well - I would be interested to see what they offer on the end of the basic CPL/IR/FrznATPL course for *that* money. It would have to be a full LOFT course as a minimum plus some sort of <no job in 12 months free IR renewal> deal...
We shall see.

Rest assured, Topper - airlines like BMI, BA and British european will not pay anything like £65K!
Besides, they will recoup the value of the course if not more in terms of salary reductions/bond agreements/return of investment - don't worry, the airlines will not be losing out financially from the high price of the course!

It IS a good time to B a wannabe. Just shop around. OATS has been the most expensive FTO for years. Multiflight regularly advertise on PPRuNe for an ab initio training @ £ 30,000. Stapleford offers a MEIR course which is £5,000 cheaper than OATS... & U end up with exactly the same licence & flight time. Don't let OATS rip U off.

Perhaps they are using some of the £65k to employ some office/admin staff.
I've not received an answer from an email and a fax I sent them last week. In both I said that I was to make an imminent choice regarding training providers.
I made my choice and my money is now in Bristol groundschools bank account not Oxfords.

I'll tell you what OATS is playing at. They're taking the piss as usual.
Shop around is my advice too. If you phone OATS and talk about things that directly relate to you giving them loads of money they (usually) take an interest and listen. If you want info about any other detail, it's like pulling teeth. Forget them.
I'm doing Bristol then Stapleford which I am confident will work for me (...eventually).

I agree with Nigel. While shopping around for who to do the ATPL groundschool with , emailed OATS a couple of times - no reply, just a brochure in the post (which I already had).
They don't seem to want modular students - fair enough if they want to concentrate on being an airline training academy, but then why advertise for modular business.
I went for Bristol in the end - no complaints so far...

I totally agree with your statement about only rich people becoming pilots.
I did my training the old way (700 hour route) which, of course, you cannot do now. I went from being an 80 hour PPL to a frozen ATPL (with instructor rating) for about £12,000. If I was going into flying now, I would have to give up on the idea of going commercial - I just could'nt afford it. I am just fortunate that I got the training done when I did!

Hour building in USA, £4000
CPL skills= £4500
FI rating= £4500
Comes to £19000. Ok its £7000 more which is a lot of money, but not that much more in the bigger scheme of things!!

I totally agree.
When I did my training just over 4 years ago the courses were slightly cheaper than they are now and I also took advantage of the NVQ Tax Relief which made a massive difference to the costs. I did the 'old' instructor course (30 hours flying, 55 hours groundschool) as opposed to the new course which I understand involves more flying and groundschool and is therefore more expensive. I also did a 'non-approved' IR which saved me about £5000.
Times have really changed since I came into this world of aviation !!!!!!

I applied for one of their shiney brochures about 3mths ago saying I was interested in modular training.The piece of A4 paper arrived today with the prices of their CPL/IR/MCC.I`m sure the training all very nice there but for the price they want for a CPL/IR I reckon with my calculations that will buy me 50hrs hour building/IMC/CPL/IR and an MCC.Still thanks for the bit of paper I have found a use for it.

I, and four other people I know gave up trying to go to oats after getting mucked around by a certain incompetent female who ran marketing. could'nt event get a brochure out of her!! Went to SFT instead, saved a packet, got a job one month after leaving!!
