Arrow Could my dream become reality?

I am doing my GCSE's this year. I am expecting mostly B's and C's in my exams. I should be getting a B in Maths and a C in Science. I should pass all exams and will then return to go to Sixth form college to study Maths, Physics and Business studies at A-level.

After these exams in the summer of 2003 i am hoping to fly out out to America to do a PPL course in Florida. I will then return and will maybe go to University to study for a subject to do with aviation i.e. Physics or Aviation.

I would like to then try and get into a sponsorship scheme with BA for my commercial licence.

Are these hopes to difficult to reach, or could it be possible. I no i will find i hard, but I will try my best to get to the very top!

Hi Bazzer:
If you want to be flying around for BA at 35,000 ft in a 747-400......you will, as long as you stick at your dream.....keep going.....dont give up.

Sure, it will be difficult. It isn't impossible, otherwise I wouldn't be flying a 747 to Delhi tomorrow!
All the very best of luck!

Quick word of warning, Maths A level and Physics A level are a lot harder than GCSE, and you need to get Grade C or above in them for sponsorship etc. If you are generally interested in the subject and think you could do well etc then do them. But if there are over subjects that you are better at and are not doing because you feel airlines will prefer Maths and Physics etc, I would honestly choose the other ones.

3 good A levels are better than patchy ones in Maths and Physics (esp if under grade C)

Best of luck

Good advice Sagey ..... I got A grades at Maths and both modular and extended Science. I subsequently took Maths and Physics at A Level with the pilot career in mind - passed maths but got a near miss in Physics.

However, put your mind to it and you'll succeed ..... good luck!

Bazzer,

Im in the year above you at the minute, and I'm doing Physics Maths and Computing A Levels. Good choices for A Levels, but try hard in Maths, as it is very tricky when you get to the next level. Try to thouroghly understand stuff like iteration and quadratics, as they are favourites on the A level P1/P2 syllabus.

Business is a good idea, as airlines are looking for good managers as well as good pilots. I am applying for BA and just about everywhere else in 2002...As there can be about 100 applicants per each position, it's going to be tough, but you never know.

If I dont get in, I'm having a deferred University place, and going to work in the engineering industry for a year, and go to Florida to get that all important PPL, probably a night rating too, before applying to BA and everywhere again, as well as Air Atlantique.

If then, I don't get in, I'll go to Uni, but keep applying

Good luck with the GCSE's, although they arent the most important things, they are a good start.

Drop me a line if you want any other help...

Kind Regards

Mike

Thumbs up

Bazzer,

I'm about six years in front of you and followed almost the exact same course that you're looking to take. GCSE's, A-Levels, Aviation Degree, Florida PPL........etc. Now working in aircraft engineering.

The other guys are right, it's probably best to do A-Levels in subjects you'll get better results in.

Apply for every scholarship, not just BA. Even if you don't get them, It's all good experience.

Alright Baz,

Can't fault any of the advice given, just offering a bit of encouragement really... I gained a B at GCSE maths (Just about), and then managed to bag an A at A'level (hope I don't sound like a big-head !)so I'm sure you'd be okay if you work hard. It isn't easy though I must admit..... Like others have said, it probably looks better to gain 3 good A'levels rather than dodgy maths and physics A'levels.... I should know... I took physics and that was a completely different story !!! All the best with your exams/flying though....

Wink

I'm fortunate to fly a 757 with a big charter airline.

The best bit of advice I was ever given is don't ever give up no matter what happens. Belive me there will be times when you will want to chuck your books in the bin, but keep on going no matter what. I only go to work around 10 days a month now so it is well worth the effort!.
