There maybe good news on the way for us poor sods who have 000's hours and non-UK IR's who are trying to convert to JAR IR's. I am hoping in the next few days to get confirmation from the CAA that I can do a non-approved (ie. discretion of the FTO) IR course as I have a FAA IR which of course they seem to think is worthless. Unfortunately I have already wasted loads of money on totally unnecessary training here in the UK, but to those who are thinking of starting the conversion - get your FTO to talk to the CAA and just express how ridiculous this situation is at the moment.

I'm sorry but I was slightly confused by your grammatical construction. Do you mean that there's hope for those holding foreign IRs or do you mean there's hope for those with thousands of hours AND foreign IRs?

Ham,
I mean any competent foreign ICAO holders who could not possibly need 50 hours and 10 grand of wasted time and money that the CAA think you need.
PS How is San Antonio treating you?

Al this minimum hours nonsense gets on. .my t1t5 it should be at the discretion. .of the FI running your course.
And that applies to the exams as well. .with a GI sign-off
If you dont know it you wont pass.. .Of course the real reason is connected . .with job protection in JAA member states
They dont want you chaps tootling off abroad. .and doing it on the cheap!
