Post Multi before IR?

With any luck I will soon have finished the dreaded ATPL exams and be in a position to start my CPL and IR training, but I am a bit unsure about the rules regarding starting the IR course without already holding a multi rating.

I have not done any multi flying yet, but I intend to do the entire IR course on a twin.

My question is this: Do I have to hold a multi rating before starting IR training, or will the training itself cover this? I have searched the CAA website and could not find anyhting about this.

Thanks very much for your help.

P.S. I have heard that PAT are very good for this part of the training, anyone got any views on them?

I also had this conception that if you sat your IR in a twin you would get the MEP as well but luckly the discussion started at aviation house while sitting the exams so i just went to ask. You definately need to get it before the IR but it is possible to sit it as part of your CPL test.

It also caused me to alter my plans somewhat so Nicky at Naples is going to have the pleasure of my company for 3 days next time i am over hour building.

Hope this helps

You'll need to have completed the multi prior to your IRT. You can combine the multi & IR training however, just make sure you get the multi prior to your IRT.

My experience was that I needed the Multi before commencing the JAR approved IR but that I think was more for scheduling and continuity. JUST MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF MULTI HOURS ie 7 inc test in VFR conditions before your IR.

In my experience (very recent) I found it better to do the multi rating prior to the IR (after the CPL though), as a kind of 'get to know your aircraft' exercise. I'm pleased to say it appears to be paying off.

Also bear in mind you can do the CPL in a twin and this counts as a multi rating and as the 'complex a/c' part of the cpl. but remember things happen a lot quicker in a twin and I know my VFR nav was piss poor even at single engine speeds!!

ENJOY and well done on getting the ellusive ATPL exam credits!!

Agree with Tinstaafl, it is a requirement that you have passed an MEP skills test prior to your IRT. Also concur that it is best to combine CPL training in multi to get the necessary for test. IR training won't cover the VFR stalls, circuits etc.
