ATPL exams - completeion advice

I took my first ATPL theoretical exams in July 2009 so I understand I need to complete them by Jan 2011. I held back on the IFR and VFR comms papers as these require effectively no study and I wanted to delay the clock starting on the 3yr IR window as much as possible to give the industry as much time as possible to recover. How late would you leave it? Say for instance I booked in for Dec exams and had a car breakdown etc so couldn't attend - would I still be able to get in for the Jan sittings?
