Download a copy of LASORS from the UK CAA website. Has everything you need to know including how many times to sit, once you sit your first exam how long you have to complete and also how long you have to complete the CPL before you lose your theoretical credits, amongst other things. It is required reading for a wannabe.

LASORS is UK specifik rules. Unless you plan to get a UK theory + license forget all about it.
You need JAR-FCL1, and the "local" rules for the country where you plan to take it.
Best way: Call you local CAA office..
