ATPL Exams
Hello I'm Looking of Doing the OXford Avaition Distance ATPL exams has anyone been on this previously; do OAA provide a decent online service to help you revise.
Or does anyone else recommend any ATPL courses?

I started doing the Oxford Distance Learning course and quickly realised it wasn't for me.
The course was then (2007, no idea if this has changed) completely paper based. You had to transpose your progress test answers onto an email for them to mark...when they got round to it.
Compare that to the Bristol.gs course which I changed to last year ( I had to suspend my learning for family reasons for a long while). The course is PC based (with paper notes too) and the progress tests are just like the real exams (but harder!) with instant feedback and results sent directly to the school.
Also, the OAA are perhaps too good. Very much an authoritative text, but they go beyond the learning objectives in my opinion, i.e too much fat. The Bristol.gs material is lean, with lots of helpful exam-proof hints on how best to understand and remember various concepts.
I just got my first round of exam results back..91% average, so it worked for me.
I am comparing the current Bristol course with the OAA course as of 2007, so this may not be a fair comparison I hasten to point out.

on-line notes, progress tests, revisions, subject overviews, all very easy to understand.
Instructors are helpful and enthusiastic and using on line help worked for me - usually answer was back within two hours (sometimes even during Saturday night) - I have to admit I have to send two or three questions twice.
Stuart (HOD) will give you lots of mnemonics to help you to remember formulas and rules - just makes life easier...
Brush up weeks are slow in pace but reasonable in depth of knowledge.
so far I have passed 11 exams (three more next week) and as far as I know all folks from my brush up class passed first time
HPL is a demo subject on their website - try it...

Bristol is the way to go my friend , the course structure and CD is excellent !! I am just on brush up and the way that they teach you and hit you with feedback gives you the best possible chance of passing and coupled with the efficiency and professionalism of the team at Bristol you will not go wrong .....In my humble opinion , (I was at another school and the course was not a patch on Bristol !)

I did Oxford in 2004-2005, I passed all my exams, but would I recommend them no, they are more set up for the integrated full time students, I used Bristol online question banks and forums, Instructors always answer you back quickly.

Yeah I looked at their Demo last night and Liked what I Saw thanks for the reccommendations...how long does each week of study take approx in hours?

It's also worth checking out the London Met Distance Learning course, it's split into 3 phases for modular, is an exam venue and you can pay for each phase individually.
There has been an aviation school there for around 30 odd years so are pretty knowledgable.

You receive a disc that is a Cd Rom of the course content . You add your start date and end date and it calculates your approximate weekly workload. The disc and content is excellent aswell as the forum for any problems you may have. I would advise contact Bristol and speak to Alex if you are seriously considering the course , the 8 exams seem daunting but 2 are Comm's so in reality its just 6 initially.

Bristol all the way, I'm currently studying mod 2 and passed all mod 1 first time with a very good average.
I cant recommend them highly enough, the Bristol system works no doubt about that. If you go through the course, hammer the QB and work hard during the brush up you will pass the exams.

Is definitely the best distance learning course you could hope to sign up to.
I personally didn't sign up but a good friend of mine did and he was extremely pleased with the CD's content, good moving pictures with explanations etc.
The response time between Bristol and himself was close to instantaneous when it came to questions and answers/explanations.
Also I would say, if it comes to reviewing your subject for an interview with an airline that those notes maybe very useful.

I used disc and manuals , you need the disc for progress tests to send to the school. If anyone is seriously considering it you can contact Bristol to request a 'demo disc' free of charge , after brush up last week i have no doubt that anyone who takes the course will not regret it.
