Finished up NOW WHAT
Ok so CPL IR done……. Now what!
So over the last couple of years I have finally finished all the training did it while I have a normal 9 to 5 which I still have so what next……
I know that the market is dead, and any hint of a job is some time off so what can I do now so that when the jobs do start filtering through I am not one of 1000’s CPL IR’s with 210 hours….
I would love to do an instructors rating but are there any instructing jobs out there…..
Is it worth buying the A320 or 737 type rating book and going through them…
Any ideas…..

Given that you still have a job to support yourself, and if you haven' t made any debt then you should be in a comfortable position to wait.
If you have the money to pay for a SSTR with a job attached to it, then you could consider buying your way in.
Otherwise I would go the FI route for now. You could take 1 or 2 students and try to find a way to combine it with your job.

Now is the tough bit. Be prepared for a wait of realistically a couple of years before perhaps even getting replies to CVs. As has just been mentioned, don't pay for a TR without a rock solid job (Ryanair) or a speculative FI rating. Not worth it. I had to wait 2yrs to get a job after qualifying and was luckily able to return to my old job in London while I waited. Being a lazy bugger as well, I employed a secretarial service to produce my CV and send a mailshot every three months. I just paid the bill. As it turned out, the job I got at Flybe (then Jersey European) in 2001 came about I reckon by persistence, timing and luck. I was fortunate enough to keep my part-time QFI position while all this was going on. I'd forward planned on my hour building and forseeing a decided shortage of cash on my part I got the FI rating when you could do it on a PPL and started instructing in 1988. From 1988 to 2001 was a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time to get where I wanted but it was the only way I could do it.

The one thing you absolutely MUST do, is keep current. You wouldn't believe the number of guys who finally get their big break in a very limited job market and throw it all away because they have let their ratings lapse and have no current flying experience.

doing the IR probably was a mistake... it will cost you a lot of money in the next years just to stay current... The next years will be most likely similar to the years before you will still be working your normal 9 to 5 job and dream about a flying career, just with less flying for yourself.... If you still have a lot of cash left you might apply for sstr with ryanair. If you are extremely lucky you will get called for an interview, then with more luck you will pass the interview and sim.... Then you will be invited to pay 30k plus living and travel expenses for the typerating
Forget about other sstr's, ryanair is a ripoff but still the best option....

I have heard from other PPRUNERS, that getting an FAA license will greatly improve your chances and make you more competitive, maybe a great idea to do that now!

Canadian Bush Flying Jobs
I am from Canada but in the UK for now . I have a PPL and thinking of getting my CPL but may wait for when I go back to Canada where it's cheaper but I am getting itchy to get back into it. Some of the pilots I took my PPL in Canada with who went on to get CPLs told me that the aviation industry is starting to pick up there and more opportunities for bush jobs so I thinking of going that route. If I do decide to wait to train in Canada I am going to see if I can find a school that will train me on a floatplane for my CPL. I had thought about being an instructor but don't think it's for me. I don't need to get a work visa as I am Canadian but have any of you guys thought about going to Canada? A friend of mine here said if you get the "working holiday visa" pretty easy to at least get there and no need for sponsorship., which is the biggest issue why hard to get a job there I understand.

Ditto with Mad Jock - please don't get an FAA licence - just stay put 9 to 5 for now, that is about as close to Utopia as you'll get...
