Threat and error management

I recently took my Human Performance theory exam and although I wasn't overconfident I would walk out with a pass I still felt that it wouldn't pose a serious problem as I had been studying quite regularly for it and was well prepared.

However, in the HPL exam I was stunned to be given several questions on TEM. I was not aware of this subject at all, as it was not in any of my study materials and it was the first time I had ever come across it. I literally had no idea of the answers to any of these questions and ultimately had to make educated guesses, to which end I didn't get any of those questions correct which resulted in a fail.

Not only was I furious that I was not informed about this subject before going into the exam but that my own flight school didn't even have anything on the subject. I now have to fork out another $160 to re-sit the exam.

If anyone has any helpful information on TEM could you please let me know. This is for the Australian HPL exam.

Cheers

TEM

Hi there

TEM is a relatively new concept in the world of flight safety and I am not altogether surprised that there is little study material around yet as the airlines are only just educating their own crews. However, there was a very good introduction to the subject, along with a classic case study, in a recent UK Flight safety magazine. When I go into work tomorrow I will try and get hold of a copy and email the relevant sections to you. Failing that, it may not be until Monday. I cannot guarantee that it will give you the 'staff' answers for your HPL exam but I can guarantee that you will find it of interest, and most probably of much more relevance to your future career than alot of the stuff in HPL.

Regards and good luck

Rob

Try the CASA website for starters:

http://www.casa.gov.au/scripts/nc.dll?WCMS:PWA:c=PC_93177

Maybe you should ask your flight school for a reimbursement of your additional exam fees, or threaten to put their name on Pprune.

Any school worth its AOC should be very well aware of the changes to this subject's material, CASA have issued many notices of its inclusion right down to PPL level and quite frankly if that wasn't communicated to you thats completely unacceptable. Mind you had you checked your CAO you will find a list of all the required knowledge as per the syllabus for each subject.

Actually its not new it was invented by Smith-Barry in 1917 and has generally been known as Airmanship. TEM is simply psychobabble for what has been there for most of the history of aviation.

University of Texas used to be one of the leaders in this area. Do a Google on their name under threat and error management and you will gain some useful info. Else wise by googling "airmanship", and T & EM you will be linked to lots of useful material. Another useful author is Dr Tony Kern. His most recent text ' redefining Airmanship', is used as reference by a few of the Uni's teaching this subject.

Good Luck

Indeed, Whopity, thank you so much for your enlightening comment. Now, do you have something useful to offer our colleague, or do you just enjoy showing off just how clever you are with a bit of name-dropping?
