Self study?

Hey all,
I have been reading some threads that advise people to do self-study or online studies before going to flight school.
I have zero knowledge of flying but am interested in going to USA to get my CPL+ME.
My question is, should I try studying on my own? Will this help me understand better when I get there to the physical school, or will it confuse me more?
Some people say its best to self study so you can get straight into the air and not do ground classes etc. Is that true / allowed? Would all schools accept this?

Finally, if the answers to the above are yes, what should I get to study? Which books / online materials? I live in Dubai, so most likely will have to order them, or find them in India where I am originally from.
I have read websites some schools mention about the jessepen system; should I get that?
Basically, what do I need which would be recognized by the FAA part 141 schools (since I will be an international student) and help me?

Thanks!
