Gapan Assessment

Hi Guys

Have done a couple of searches to no avail, but has any of you completed the Gapan Apptitude Test? Looks worth doing but hard to find info on the actual assessment itself? What I am keen to know is what the day involves and what do they assess?

Also is there any areas worth brushing up on before going?

Hi

try this link

Aptitude Testing

I have done them. Essentially they are the same as the aptitude tests done by the RAF for their pilot selection (I think they do also a few more).
They are all computer based, with a keyboard, joystick & some sliding pedals for your feet. They are memory, hand/eye/foot, reaction tests. The ones with all three are pretty challenging to say the least. You are all graded out of 200 pts, altho they never tell you your score. However, they do place you in bands, ie below average (ie you shouldnt be thinking of this as a career), average (you have what it takes) & above average (you definitely have what it takes).

The feedback is by a highly experienced RAF/Airline pilot, and is quite honest. They do offer some useful pointers too.

You can't practise for them, as I have seen the pilotapt tests on the mkt & the RAF ones are much slicker & quite different in places (especially the memory ones), so save your money!

To be honest, if you want a completely independent test of your aptitude, you really should do these without practising, but just my opinion. They are quite challenging, but it is fun.

The NAAFI does a mean curry for lunch too!

Hope that helps

I took these tests back in October. Aptitude is one of two factors you can't do anything about that will say whether or not you will be successful at pilot training (the other is medical).

As has been said above, it is graded to a score (as I recall, the maximum score is 180) and you are then put into a band depending on how well you did. When I took it, these were as follows:

0-89 out of 180 -- Below Average chance of success at pilot training
90-109 out of 180 -- Average chance of success at pilot training
110-119 out of 180 -- High Average chance of success at pilot training
120-180 out of 180 -- High chance of success at pilot training

As mentioned above, they test memory, hand/eye/foot co-ordination, concentration and multi-tasking (which is basically all of the aforementioned at the same time). It's an interesting day and certainly useful if you want to have some evidence to provide a bank for improving your chances at getting a loan or if you want to have the confidence that you're not wasting your money training.

I did them back in April (I think) and it was worth it. I think the only advice I can give is not to panic. Alot of the tests (possibly all of them) are designed to see how you work under pressure, other than that I don't really think you can practice for them.

Also did the GAPAN test. Don't let the guards with SA80's get you nervous!! They give you plenty of time to relax and give you a thorough debreif afterwards too.

Chatting to the GAPAN folk helped me confirm in my mind that this is what I really wanted to do (not that there was much doubt) and it was well worth the cost. GAPAN don't actually take any money out of this btw, you're literally paying the assesment costs and the GAPAN bods are there on their own time
