Instructor rating - When??

Hi all,

I will have access to fund my JAA PPL, Hour build (200hrs), ATPL GS, CPL and an Instructor rating next year (been busy saving ). I don't really want to take out a loan to complete the rest of the training (if I get that far of course!) in the current economic climate so was wondering if anyone else has followed the route I described above? Am I right in saying once I have completed the ATPL GS I have 3 years in which to get my Instrument rating?

Hi Craigy,

In September '06 I had a tight budget to get me through everything to lead to an f(ATPL). Since then I have been back to work twice to save funds again! So be generous with your figures.

At the minute Im finishing the IR, and this is on the credit cards, maybe not the most sensible but i'll be back to work in a few weeks to start paying it off. Its a weird passion this flying, get up to eyeballs in debt before you have a job!

To answer, i think many people have been in that position, but what you do is up to you. I too am thinking about FI rating, at least if you get there debt free you can save again towards IR or MCC. I've been asking advice about FI rating and cabair offer sponsorship (part or full), check out there website and see if it suits.

Good luck!

Correct you will have 36 months to complete the IR from the point of finishing your ATPL exams. However there is nothing wrong with instructing for a year to build some hours prior to doing the IR. Infact if you have a few hundred hours behind you when you complete your IR your chances of getting employed are much higher. Do your IR at low hours and then instruct; you will probably end up instructing for a year and have to pay for an IR renewal and secondly with a loan to support you may not be able to financially consider instructing full time.

There is currently a shortage of instructors and it is now possible to get salaried instructor positions, although the flight pay only arrangement are still the most common.

Anyway if you end up doing ppl instructing at a school that also does IR training you may be able to get a discounted rate on the IR course.
