Exam Appeal Advice Please help

Hi all
got my results today i failed my GNAV badly 43%
i was very confident with the test and was sure i passed ok

i believe that i may have made an error on the test paper on inadvertently put the answers in the wrong boxes.

My thinking in this is that when i did the exam i circle the anwers on the paper and then transfer them across after i am competed.
i think in the exam pressure situation i may hav put them in out of order
as when i spoke to others about questions i kknew i got them correct.

on my scratch paper i did the workings for all the questions and put down the question numbers.

Is this a justified means for a remark and would they look at the scratch paper to verify

please let me know as i am realy gutted at the moment

The answers you mark on the answer sheet are the ones they take, they are machine read so a remark isn't likely to help.

It sounds like you are using a poor system, mark the answer you think it is on the answer sheet and then if in any doubt write the question number on the working out paper to review at the end, you are only using pencil so it's eay to amend, this way you won't get the answers muddled up.

This is very tenous and several parties removed from the source - however, I understand someone recently at OAT got 23% when he was expected to get in the 90's. OAT requested some kind of re-mark type procedure and he was then given 100% by the CAA.

We were told this while being instructed on the importance of correctly filling in the answer sheet (which this chap had not) but it could well have been a story to make sure we did it properly (although it came across as fairly genuine and not from the sort of person who would normally make something up).

It's a dangerous way of doing things by marking the answers on the question paper. Many a pilot has gone before you and not had time to transfer the answers over at the end or done what you think you have done and put them in the wrong boxes !!.

Always always mark the answers on the answer paper, if you are unsure of a question, put a discrete mark next to the number on the answer sheet and carry on, that way you don't end up putting the answers down next to the wrong question numbers, then at the end you know which to go back to straight away and can then rub out the mark you made once you have finally answered the question.

Worked for me, and I've passed them all now, got the results this am.

Turns out this was a true story but the chap filled in the top of the paper wrong (i guess he put the wrong exam number or something) so this is the only situation you are likely to get a regrade.

Always mark the answers on the answer paper and use a decent eraser to rub out the mistakes. If the computer thinks you have marked 2 boxes, it will automatically mark it as wrong.

cjuk28 You can always pay for a remark which is done by hand I think, also I would advise you to talk to your CGI. The only thing else you can do is keep up with the GNAV study and get it next time.

Good luck

he asked what he can do, he doesn't ask how to make the same mistake!!!

I think you should talk to your school manager, is it Bristol?and see if they can make an appeal, and give a look at your answer sheet. All you want is a pass at 75%.

damn! that's too bad!

Talking CJUK28 here!!!!!!!!

After a miserble day yesterday with the 43%
i compiled a letter to the caa exam manager at gatwick explaining my predicament and what had happened in the exam
throughout the course i got 90-100% passes in progress.
so to get a 43 was impossible even after chatting to colleagues about questions you get an indication of how well you did and no way was it 43%

Anyway i sent the email at 10pm east coast usa time as i am in florida and when i got up this morning at 6am usa- 11am uk time
i expected a caa generated email to say my email was received and it can take up to 7 days to reply

Imagine my amazement when i read this

Thank you for your email.

I have looked into your case about your General Navigation subject, when you coded in your answer sheet you actually used another candidates booking number which resulted in you receiving the result of 43%. I am pleased to say that you actually passed your General Navigation examination with 88%. A new revised result sheet will be posted out to you.

HOLY S**T there is a god.

and what a great response time from the caa.

So maybe a little celebration drink tonight instead of the drowning sorrows like last night

Happy landings

Yes, marking your answer sheet incorrectly, it's easy to do. Leave a question to come back to, but forget to leave the space empty on the answer sheet=good way to turn a 90+ % result into a 63% failure! Trust me, I know this well!

And in general asking for a re-mark will not be fruitful, unless you have incorrectly coded something at the top or something similar. The only grounds for appeal are against the way the exam was conducted. Usually any appeal about the actual mark will not be entertained.

Congrats on the good news! As you say, the CAA have been good and to be honest every dealing Ive had with them has always been positive.

I sympathise with the exam paper situation though. I sat (and passed) JAA PPL Air Law & Op's and HPL on Tuesday....left 2 questions to come back to in air law and then ended up putting the 2 answers in the wrong boxes somehow. God knows how but thankfully picked up on it when I went back through and double checked all my answers. I know the pressure is a tad different to ATPL's but it just goes to show how its easy to make stupid mistakes when you're concentrating on answering the questions correctly.

Anyway, bad news for the fella who got 43% but I'd be happy with 88% so good on ya!
