Converting a CAA license to an FAA one

im sure this has been covered many times here but could find any, maybe im not using the right search keys

so how long does the process take anyway...

theres no one running a flight instructor course in my country so the main reason for going abroad is to do the FI course, and as far as i have read you need to have a license of that specific country from which you are doing the FI course.

as far as i have read, when you apply for the conversion, you get a PPL. but for the CFI/CFII course you need a CPL, so whats the procedure after that. when you get the PPL, you sit for the written exams for the comm. certificate and give the check ride. or do you have to do the comm. training again from the start?

oh and i'd appreciate you guys recommending a club or two near LA or Hayward, CA...

thanks
