Well if it is has to be done in the plane (and it will have to if you've let your IR expire) you can renew it in the States. I revalidated mine a couple of years ago in Florida. As it was, I happened to be on holiday there so it made sense to kill two birds with one stone (Geese exempted ;-)).
Last year I renewed at the Flight Centre at Wolverhampton and it was done with minimum fuss and reasonable rates. Also, for the MEP renewal, ccts were done at EGBO with no charge, which considering you have to do 3 or 4 makes a big saving !

If it's a revalidation (less than 12 months since last re-issue) then you can do it in a suitably approved FNPT2, as long as your last one was done on an aeroplane.
