An SFI can only instruct in a sim. A TRI can carry out all the training needed for the appropriate type-rating.

So whats the use of having an SFI rating on a type? I would have thought that all you would do as an TRI was instruct for a conversion or initial course on type and then as TRE you can carry out opc/lpc on types so don't really see what difference is still between sfi and tri?

SFI rating allows instructors who may be either past retirement age or are medically restricted, to pass on their knowledge/experience without ever setting foot on-board an aircraft.

Over the years I have been instructed by SFI's who fit both of the above examples.

Our company has a number of SFI`s, all are Training Capt`s. They carry out day 1 refresher training in the sim prior to OPC or LPC. They also carry out the first four or so details of the initial type rating.
