Type Rating - BAe 146?

Hello all,

I am investigating the possibility of a type rating that will most likely lead to a job at the end of it for a low hours pilot (please no comments on paying for a type rating), and the 146 sprang to mind. Does any one know which TRO's do this and the cost?

Also previous experiences would be very welcome.

Thanks folks.

Re: Where can i get a BAE 146 type rating?

IS there any particular reason for the 146 rating?
would you not go for another rating instead? Airbus/B737?

Re: Where can i get a BAE 146 type rating?

No particular reason other than i thought it might have more chance of employment for a low hours pilot with no hours on type.

As it appears from what i ve read that if you have a 737 or bus type rating but no real experience then its still very tough findin a job.

Just thinking over the possibilites at present

Why the BAe146? If you have a definite job offer at the end i.e. in writing OK go for it.

But if you're just picking the 146 because it's you're favourite aircraft since you were a kid and always dreamed of flying it, well then your pissing your money into the wind. I wanted to fly the 707. No chance. I look at TV screens everyday.

To answer your question, I had a few pals do a 146 rating with an airline and they used the BAE sim in Woodford near Manchester. Try and give them a call, but you'll probably need a partner too.

Which Turbo Prop rating is the best to do if BAe146 is a bad option? (in Europe)

Re: Where can i get a BAE 146 type rating?

The beast - if your interested in doing a BAe146 type rateing try contacting Flybe at Exeter as they sometimes do external type rateing's for other people - you would be better off on the RJ as opposed to the 146 as there slowly being phased out and there are probably more RJ's about and in use.
But as the other poster's have said - in the longterm you would be better off getting a 737 or A320 rating or if the cost of that put's you off then go for a turboprop rating on something like the Jetstream31/41 or the the ATR as there are still a lot of operators in europe still useing these types.

Hope this helps.

I would try to avoid getting a self-sponsored type rating until you really really have to. Only use it as a last resort.
I think you have just as good a chance without the rating to be honest.

I agree with you Pipergirl. How long do you wait though. I finished my MCC in December and already the whole thing feels like a lost cause. I know it can take months before you even get a sniff at an opportunity so I can fully understand the frustration of people who end up opting to paying for a type rating.
As for "Thebeast", I trained with him, and I would'nt employ him to empty bins !!

Was that the begining. middle or end of last month?

My friend, in this game you need buckets of patience or you'll end up swinging from a short rope over a long drop!

It took me years to get my first sniff but admittedly, I didn't pay for a TR.

Of the guys I know that went the "hope it buys me a job" route, I'm glad I didn't bother.

My word, not a sniff since december eh (which year?). 31 years ago (sigh) I put myself through Oxford and waited nine months 'for a sniff'~and I would think that almost every airline pilot would tell you the same thing. On a more practical note, forget the 146, it's obsolete, getting obsoleter by the moment and a you'd be wasting your money. For a TP type rating it's a toss-up between an ATR or Dash 8, but I think a little patience is in order before spending yet more money. I'm afraid you're going to find that no matter what types/experience you have most operators will want something different. If you have 1000 hrs P1 in the Scruggs Wonderplane Mk1, at the interview 'they' will express regret that you don't have any time in the Mk2. Oh well, have patience, keep knocking on doors and something will turn up, it usually does.

Re: Where can i get a BAE 146 type rating?

Be careful with type ratings. You may find to your cost that having one (especially with no time on type) will actually shut more doors to you than it will open. Rather silly when you're desperate to get started in this game.

Patience is your best and most valuable asset, and recruitment has not been better than it is at present since at least 2000.

Re: Where can i get a BAE 146 type rating?

I talked to Malmö Aviation last week regarding typerating on the RJ, if you look on their websit www.malmoaviation.se and you will find what they can offer they have B737, Saab2000 and F100 as well. It will take you back some cash..... It seems that the ones that has taken the course has gotten flying jobs afterwards . Good luck

If I was going to pay for a rating before a job offer, it would most def be Airbus without question. More operators of that type in Europe.
