Can anyone tell me what you need to become an ATPL ground instructor?

You don’t need any formal qualifications just a good subject knowledge and decent teaching skills. If you wish to become a ground instructor, you will need to be assessed and “signed off” by the Head of Training of the GTO you wish to work for and then at some point (probably during the schools annual approval) someone from the CAA will sit in on your class and give you an evaluation.
