Frozen ATPL

Hi;

Could anyone tell me what Frozen ATPL is?

I know that you have to be 23 years of age to go for the ATPL, but does this include the Frozen part?

Also, How old do you have to be to go on 'Line Training'?

Thanks

The ATPL requires a minimum of 1500 hours, which must include:

500 hrs multi-pilot in transport or commuter aircraft
250 hrs PIC (or 100 PIC and 150 PICUS)*
200 hrs cross country flights (100 as PIC or PICUS)
75 hrs instrument time
100 hrs night flight as PIC or co-pilot

* PIC is Pilot-In-Command and PICUS is Pilot-In-Command-Under-Supervision

If you have sat the ATPL groundschool examinations succesfully, but not achieved the hour requirements for the ATPL licence then this is referred to as a frozen ATPL. Normally, the holder will be a CPL/IR ME with the ATPL groundschool exams under their belt.

I thought you only had to be 21 to hold an ATPL (at least according to the air law exam for ATPL that I sat last week!). It's a little irrelevant though...

A frozen ATPL refers to somebody who has passed all the required exams for the issue of an ATPL but does not have the required flying hours. As a CPL holder you can start line training on a commercial type as soon as you are qualified (age 18).

Jamie, one of the inevitable benefits of a board such as this is that there's almost no question which hasn't been asked before. To try and avoid people asking the same questions over and over again, we provide a search function to help you look through the collective wisdom of past contributors.

Because some questions come up especially frequently, or are of particular interest, we have a number of 'sticky' threads which sit at the top of the forum in the hope that they will be read by those looking for such information. To make it especially obvious, we give them titles like: Some General Background Info, Frequently Asked Here and Archive Reference Threads, READ BEFORE YOU POST A QUESTION.

I'd have a look in those; you never know, you might find what you're looking for.
