Professional Flight Simulation Software

My friend has just begun his flight training.
I am looking for a gift.

Can someone endorse a flight simulation program? In particular software that can run on OS X.

I assume there are more advanced professional programs than the Microsoft Flight Simulation games.

thanks!

How good is x-plane??

It looks good on the outside, but more importantly what are the cockpits and flight dynamics like??

I've not used it personally, but know a lot of academics who use X-plane as an aid to teaching aircraft design and flight mechanics, so I'd assume pretty realistic.
