Question ATPL in the UK, Europe and the World

Can anyone direct me or lend some general advice about the licencing system not just in this coutry but across this planet.

I've been an aspiring pilot for many years now but I still could not profess to knowing what the different lisences refer to..

Is there such a thing as a UK ATPL? Or is it always a JAA ATPL as the UK is a member of the JAA?

JAA= European, but is it uniform and recognised across the whole continent?

FAA is clearly the US equivalent of the JAA lisence.

Is there such thing simply as an "international" lisence. Like the ICAO?
To what are employers referring when they ask for an international Commercial Pilots lisence?

What are the differences between these lisences? I know there is a huge difference between the training the ATPL guys are studying for here as opposed to an FAA lisence, but what about UK/JAA/ICAO?

I'm not expecting detailed answers to these questions. They just highlight my misconceptions and ignorance. Where can I go to cure these ailments??

You need to read the sticky thread at the top of this forum. It has links to threads that will answer most, if not all, of your questions.
