Maintaining the Class 1?

A quick wannabe specific medical question:

Do you chaps maintain your Class 1 when training or let it lapse to a Class 2 with the intention of topping it up before the big day?

My Class 1 has lapsed only last week. I will renew it in October just before I start the CPL course in November, so at the moment it is effectively just a Class 2.

If you are not employed as a pilot then it's perfectly acceptable to allow your class one to lapse for a couple of weeks. I have done this at each renewal and have managed to eek out an extra month and a half from it!
