From what I can determine, it is only really a viable route for sponsored/semi-sponsored students. It will be a cheaper way for Airlines to train cadets but work out more expensive when privately funded. I think that kind of half answers the question.

In a way yes, simply because they would have either sponsored them themselves or bought them “read made” from someone like CTC as and when they need them.
It’s very unlikely that there will be many self-sponsored MPL graduates as it’s not really a viable option for someone in that situation.
So I doubt that airlines will ever have to choose between self-sponsored MPL graduates and those with a traditional CPL/IR.
