737 open book philosophy

hi everyone,
just been invited to attend b737-adv course at saa,former guys who have been there claim that the written examz are "open book" but still very confusing and difficult,so i am a bit puzzled there,
currently self studying vol.1 and 2 manuals with the qrh,so any help in this subject will be highly appreciated,

And, well, the B737 CBT course is also available "somewhere" for "everybody" to use it...
