Cessna

Does anyone know the source of the weird sound Cessnas make as you flare? Like this..at about 2.20 to 2.30 (not the stall warner) sort of a sound like gas escaping from a bottle. I reckon it might be the wing air intakes for the cockpit ventilation but I'm not sure.

Big Pistons Forever 23rd February 2013 00:50

Sound is from the stall warn. In the C 172 it is a trumpet with a reed in it. Unlike the electrical vane type it is not a on/off unit. You will hear the air rushing into the trumpet before there is enough air flow to push the reed over enough to sound the horn.

thing 23rd February 2013 01:05

Thanks, knew it was some sort of 'wing hole thing'!

rantax82 23rd February 2013 02:26

like one of my instructors was use to say that's the "good landing" indicator noise :}

dont overfil 23rd February 2013 07:23

I've asked this question before. Our c182 does it as well usually when heavily loaded. Ours has an electric stall Warner which goes off at the same time.
I thought the noise may come from the flaps but you may be correct.

I don't think the sound has anything to do with the stall warner.
Quite sure the sound is comming from the air vents.

flyingpony 24th February 2013 12:35

I have always assumed this noise was generated from the (almost) windmilling prop at a high AOA in the flare.

Halfbaked_Boy 24th February 2013 14:51

Why not ask Cessna? At least then you'll have a definitive answer :)

I would be interested to know also.

Lew747 24th February 2013 21:00

I've also wondered this. Doesn't seem to be stall horn related. For me it's always when I pull the nose up to hold-off, then flare. I put it down to a change in airflow around the cabin/windscreen as the pitch is increased and power reduced.

rats404 24th February 2013 21:43

Stall warner.

24Carrot 24th February 2013 22:46

Wheel spin-up?

thing 24th February 2013 22:54

It's before the wheels touch the ground. Happens on a 152 as well but not a PA28.so it's obviously something peculiar to Cessnas.

Desert185 24th February 2013 23:04

Stall warning horn.

Flyingmac 25th February 2013 07:52

I've heard this sound on several types. It's a sigh of relief from the right seat.:)

Weekend Flyer 25th February 2013 11:42

It is caused by changing airflow over the Engine Baffles just inside the Cowling. The noise on our C150E changed when we replaced/repaired worn Baffles.

thing 25th February 2013 16:34

Any advance on stall warner, engine baffles, wheel spin up, fresh air vents, flaps and windmilling props? :)

flyingpony 25th February 2013 16:57

It could happen :}

24Carrot 25th February 2013 17:23

Any advance on ...
OK, can't resist a challenge!

Those wheel struts look just like a giant tuning fork! :)

S-Works 25th February 2013 18:48

It's the stall warner. Same as my 172.

localflighteast 26th February 2013 14:56

I always thought it was the sharp intake of breath from my instructor as we are about to leave a crater in the ground (or go bunny hopping down the runway!)

skynewbie 26th February 2013 21:31

Cessna stall horn

Sounds like a cross between a baby crying and cat meowing for milk lol.

dont overfil 27th February 2013 07:51

It's definately not the actual stall warner but it does the job.

I think Cessnas are alive. They moan when in cloud and meow near the stall. They may even be female 'cause they squeal at high G.

D.O.

S-Works 27th February 2013 08:17

It is the stall warner horn. They are a simple airflow device so they 'groan' as they come on. That sounds exactly the same as my 172 and thr 152 before it.

dont overfil 27th February 2013 10:30

Our C182T does it. It has an electric stall warner which peeps like a Piper.

In fact the electric one packs up every now and then but the natural one does just fine.

Even on the C172 the noise is definately from a different source.

S-Works 27th February 2013 10:56

It is my understanding that all Cessnas have the reed stall warner even those that are fitted with electric stall warners.

The stall warner is a reed that is mounted in the wing root just beside the cabin vent on the pilot side. There is an opening on the wing route that as the angle of attack increases causes air to be drawn over the reed which makes it vibrate. The vibration is amplified by a small horn type arrangement and its this combination that makes the wheezing wailing sound that you can hear on the video.

After a thousand or so hours in them I would recognise that sound anywhere.

I must have another look! Only the electric warner is described in the POH. The soft "whoo" before the warner comes in proper on things vid is all we get from the C182 even in the stall when the electric one is on strike.

S-Works 27th February 2013 12:15

The soft whoooo is the airflow that feeds the reed. You may not have the reed so dont get the full effect but as far as I am aware the rest of it is common to the whole 1xx range.

KeesM 28th February 2013 11:31

C150 - C150E (1959-1965) have electric stall warners only. The reed ones are from 1966 and later(together with the swept tail)

dont overfil 28th February 2013 15:46

Hi Bose,
Just had a look again at our C182 and other Cessnas here. Ours does not have the reed aperture like the earlier models. The electric vane is further out on the opposite wing with no opening. Only openings are the air vents.

It must be the air vents. Just like the gun ports on a P51:)
