What's happening at Oban?

After all the heated discussion it seems things have gone quite at Oban. Did the air service do what it promised and are things back to normal with the FBO and the airport?

Oban

This was taken off the oban site!

Oban Airport
This airfield is open 7 days a week from 09:00 to 18:00hrs (local time). It has a new 1264m long runway.

hope this helps!
regards G.

Phil Space 13th January 2009 11:36

I thought we all knew it had a new runway. That was what all the fuss was about. Is anybody using it and are there lots of commercial flights in place to pay for the massive costs which I believe are around £9 million:confused:

Great facility. Not much queing at the holding points.
Its a bit like when a grand ship is abandoned on the sea bed all the little fish (GA) move in to their new grand environment.

I take it you havent been to Oban in a while. Where is all the GA you are talking about?? I aint seen much of it. The summer was poor and the winter so far aint much better. We get a few in now and again but nothing to write home about. So yes it could be a GA hub but nothing like it at this time.

Sorry. Trying to put a positive slant on things.
I was in a couple of weeks ago and there were a few others buzzing around but the days are a bit short just now.

It hasn't stopped me visiting but there is a certain attraction to visiting an uncontrolled field.
I can't see closing the other runway makes much difference as it wasn't much different to 01/19.
The published 3 hours ppr. Now that is a put off to those not in the know.
The £15 landing fee is slightly too high. I am in the retail business and it's amazing how a small price adjustment makes the difference between a sale and no sale.
Perhaps the council could put together a deal including Mull as well as Colonsay ETC? I believe there are some ideas being discussed.

Crash one 13th January 2009 16:30

Went in there during the Xmas Hol, Half price landing fee £5.
Beautiful place no problems,. What is all the fuss about?
Dont forget to call "Oban Information" not "Radio". but no big deal.

It's not so long ago that 3 of our 8 based aircraft (just over an hour away on the dark side ... sorry ... east side of the country) flew over for lunch.

But as has been pointed out the days are short and the weather isn't exactly helping.

We try and visit as often as we can!

We are back to regular use of the airport with Paul turning out night or day Christmas day included! Come to think of it twice on Christmas day! He is trying resume normal services!! Love him or loathe him he is one of the airports biggest assets! apart from fab runway!
John.

Johnm 13th January 2009 17:14

Anybody got a clue why they want 3 hours PPR? It can't be for traffic sequencing!

Crash one 13th January 2009 19:18

When I phoned for PPR I was asked for ETA, "one hour fifteen". "No problem see you later".
Suggest you phone & ask.

fisbangwollop 13th January 2009 19:32

If you forget to PPR, give me a call at Scottish Info 119.875, I will make a quick phone call on your behalf and I know the response will normally be good......as for Oban being quiet at times that does not seem to me to be the case .......as most aircraft call me on the way over there in the past few weeks when weather has been fine I have talked at times to a steady stream inbound!!:ok:

Crash one 13th January 2009 19:45

Grtz,

There used to be an active Gliding Club at North Connel.

How are they doing these days?
I'd reckon that there are five other Gliding Sites in Scotland.

Sport Aviation is getting less and less these days.

Sixteen posts on the first day of a new Oban thread. It won't be long before it is sixteen pages again. ;)

BRL 13th January 2009 23:51

I don't think so. :)

SkyHawk-N 14th January 2009 01:43

I never did read the Oban thread as it became too long to fully understand. Anyone care to explain it all in one concise summary?

Lurking123 14th January 2009 05:34

Willy wave about alleged excessive council expenditure, poor planning and bully boy tactics against those who wanted Oban to stay as it had always been.

silverknapper 14th January 2009 18:12

Pink headset anyone?

140KIAS 14th January 2009 20:40

My view is that we are where we are with Oban. Sure they could have achieved much of what was needed at a fraction of the cost but we cant turn the clock back.

The ops guys at Oban are trying hard to make you welcome. I've been over a couple of times of late (I suspect with a few of the other posters hiding behind pseudonames), its still a great place to visit and the scenery hasn't changed.

Also Paul is still there dispensing fuel, the GA community really should try to support him as much as possible its thanks to fuel at Oban that has opened up much of the rest of the west coast.

There was talk on the mega-thread of an Oban/Glenforsa flyin however that didn't come to much. Perhaps its time to resurrect these thoughts and show some positive support for the facility and people who's lively hood depends on it.

Red Chilli 14th January 2009 22:49

silverknapper - I wonder how she's doing, that was indeed an historical thread!

FBW

a steady stream
If a urologist ever asks you for a definition, may I suggest you reply carefully?

Regretably, the only commercial (and I use that word with some leeway) traffic remains the HA flights to the islands 4 days a week. I don't see any other operators rushing to get started with other services.

A steady stream? More like the occasional drip!

It's a great facility and such a shame to see low traffic volumes.

Maybe we should try to combine an Oban thread with a pink headset thread and see if we can break something :E

You cant beat the view from the airport at Oban on a nice sunny day! Either summer or winter the view is breath taking no matter which direction you look! Fantastic place to use as a base to explore further up the West coast and indeed to Inverness and the East travelling up the Great Glen. Fuel is available there which is in short supply once you leave the Central belt of Scotland!
The guys there are fantastic with nothing being too much trouble and if passing and fancy a quick stop I have called on the radio and never been refused a landing! There maybe a PPR rule but as with most things in aviation circumstances change and Oban Information seem to be very accommodating! One of the best airports I have visited!
Keep up the good work!

Oban Loony Toons

It has been announced that a new airfield manager has been appointed to run Oban, Coll and Colonsay.

Is this the 3rd or 4th in the last year?

They used to have a perfectly good one who also runs the refuelling operation.

Why are they getting through managers so quickly. With the amount of commercial traffic I would have thought this is a cushy stress free number:ok:

I am curious, what is happening? Are there still commercial flights? Are there any passengers?

I understand the BN2 operated by Highland Airways has had pretty good load factors since its start of operation.....I also understand that an Oban-Islay service is planned for the coming Summer!!:ok:

Gelande Strasse 9th March 2009 07:37

pretty good load factors
...........and your source is?

It will be good to see a service to Islay, but will it be supported by the public purse or stand alone. If the latter, a phrase involving the words cat, hell and chance springs to mind.
