There was a time when many of us on here knew each other in Real Life. This thread makes me think we must be due for another Private Flying meeting/fly-in/bash/get-together. Any thoughts?

BackPacker 25th December 2008 10:10

At the very least, I hope this thread somehow becomes a sticky for a while - not because it needs to be, just because it deserves to be!
Hear, hear!

(Or should that be Ho Ho Ho?)

IO540: Drives a banged up ford modeo stuffed FULL of aviation charts. Loads of parking tickets on the back sea, a bit like the start to "The Gaffer".. Is unbeatable at trivial pursuit. and always right. Empties quiz machines of their contents.

Very funny :ok: if almost totally incorrect :)

Drives a 1995 Jap import.
Does not use paper charts.
Does get parking tickets very occassionally but appeals every one of them.
Never heard of Trivial Pursuit - is it a board game?
Always right - not far off there :) No, you have to be female to be that.
Never heard of a quiz machine.

Actually, I personally know about 3 of the others listed and their descriptions are also a long way off. It's funny how one can get a way off impression from someone's writing. But it would be wrong for me to write my impressions of them :)

A get-together is an interesting idea. I'd go for it. I would be a little cautious though. Firstly, I would not want to ever [again] meet up anybody on here doing personal attacks, and secondly one of the advantages of pprune is that most of us don't know each other so the forum isn't cliquey like say Flyer or (to use an extreme example) UKGA. I find it annoying when threads repeatedly disintegrate into in-jokes between pub-mates. Anyway, any suggestions for a location?

Whirlybird 25th December 2008 11:01

I'll start what will probably turn into a long argument/discussion....

Somewhere near East Midlands Airport. Near the middle of the country (apologies to those in Scotland; I know it isn't really), easy to fly into, near the motorway system so easy to drive to, near some nice places for sightseeing...and fairly local for me. :ok:

IO540 25th December 2008 12:18

OK for me.

vanHorck 25th December 2008 13:00

suits me fine! But is there a nice GA field nearby?

But how about Duxford? It's near to Stanstead for the Scots and the bl**dy foreigners..... :ok::ok::ok:

Choice of 4 - in order of proximity Nottingham (EGBN), Derby (EGBD), Leicester (EGBG) and Tatenhill (EGBM). The southerners are always harping on about how wonderful they have it down south, but where else in the UK do you have the above situation with a convenient, H24 IFR divert conveniently in the middle of them all :)

S-Works 25th December 2008 16:32

Ha! What a funny thread. Merry Christmas to you PompeyPaul and to everyone else here.

My 'listing' is a little off mark but funny nonetheless. I will confess to liking my toys though!!!!

It is easy to gain an image of a person you have never met through interpretation/misinterpretation of the written word. Just the same as it easy to assume you are under attack through a misreading of others attempts at humour. The flyer forums maybe cliquey but that is because generally everyone does know everyone else and with the odd exception the postings do not degenerate to a personal level as they tend to do on here.

I have met many of the posters on here and without exception the real person verse the assumed persona has been very different. Even Chilli who often comes across as the grumpiest man alive is a pleasure to spend time with and not short on humour!

Notwithstanding this is an interesting forum that once in awhile offers insightful advice.

So as I said wishing all a very merry Christmas.

where............?

Merry xmas all :)

Chilli Monster 25th December 2008 18:44

That lot who fly around the London / South East area and think the world finishes north of Watford Gap :)

Right - time for work :( Merry Christmas, what's left of it.

Nottingham is nice, though not that easy to find by road.

Derby has shortish grass runways and is very small; not sure how they'd cope with a a large gathering.

Leicester is good, though a bit awkward to get to from the motorway as it's the wrong side of the town.

Tatenhill is really nice...I would say that, as I work there. But again, a bit of a drive from the motorway system.

I'd be happy with any of them.

vanHorck 25th December 2008 21:41

unless a moderator steps in, I think somebody's gonna have to take an initiative.....

Can Tattenhill provide car park, plane park and catering facilities?

That could only have been written by a woman!

I suppose the BIG sign pointing to "Nottingham Airport" from the main Nottingham ringroad would be difficult to see  (and for those approaching from the motorway it's a mere 15 minutes from that).

I thought we, as pilots, were meant to have half decent navigation skills :)

stickandrudderman 25th December 2008 23:22

Ah, the slanging's started already!

Eh, Chilli, watchit!!!! Yer think I'll put up with that? Handbags at dawn, tomorrow, at Netherthorpe...and I can find it, can you?!!!!!!!! Whatyamean you don't own a handbag? :)

For those wondering, we know each other

OK, Chilli, you're half right. The singposts mysteriously disappear after a while. From one direction, there isn't one when you get to the little lane where you need to turn off for the actual airfield. But I may have approached from the non-motorway direction, can't remember.

Tatenhill has car parking, plane parking, and catering (weekend only for the last of those).

Chilli Monster 26th December 2008 10:59

Handbags at dawn, tomorrow, at Netherthorpe...
B*gger - you win. It's not the handbag that's defeated me though - it's the runway at Netherthorpe! :)

batninth 27th December 2008 13:02

Apologies for interjecting into the argument but I'm taken by the comment:

It's not the handbag that's defeated me though - it's the runway at Netherthorpe!
Defeated by a runway??? I don't recall anyone being vanquished by a runway before, unless there is a deleted scene in one of the Star Wars films along the lines of:

Darth Vader: Prepare my Imperial fighter for the assault on Earth
Underling: Sorry DV, the fighter fleet are all grounded pending an AD from Imperial fighters. We're working on them now.
Darth Vader: Then prepare the Seneca, it may be old technology but its sound & will get us to the landing ground at Netherthorpe
Underling: Ahhh...DV...We've just been looking at Pooley's and there's only 400m at best, we may have to divert to Leeds-Bradford or Sherburn. I've asked the storm troopers to hold off starting the battle to give us time
Darth Vader: <Breathing Deeply>
This is not good we'll never take control of Worksop at this rate, my plan is defeated by the runway at Netherthorpe.
<Turns with a swish of his black cape>
Turn this Death Star around, we'll knock six bells out of Hoefir IV

I'll keep taking the tablets...

ShyTorque 27th December 2008 13:30

It was more fun until they spoiled it by re-aligning it, making it longer... but 36 is still the same old 309 metres for landing. I think everyone should have a go at that one.

Whirlygig 27th December 2008 14:03

Sounds like that's 300 metres of unnecessary real estate!!!

Cheers

Whirls

In my Seneca!?
