Stapleford and Brest Control (or information) in France.
It's been since mid 90's that I haven't flown over Kent but I do remember the overlapping back then. |
Stapleford is not in Kent of course; and the D.O.C. of an air to ground frequency is usually limited to a maximum of 10 miles from the station. This means that pilots should not be trying to transmit on the frequency outside this range. By doing so they may be causing all sorts of problems for other units that have been also been allocated the frequency (in different geographical areas) perhaps amongst them Brest Control!
Suspect that some of the instances posted here are based on transmissions outside the D.O.C.s of the airfileds concerned. Also it is entirely possible that the ground equipment at some A/G FISO units is not subject to the same regular testing of performance and levels that ATC units would be, and therefore may be transmitting at a stronger signal than they were licensed for. |

So given that places like Sibson drop parachutists from up to FL150, how am I supposed to ask them what their activity status is when I'm flying close by at FL90? |
Coming out of Fowlmere yesterday (Saturday), I tuned the radio to North Weald on 123.52, but actually dialled 123.25. It was bit of a surprise to hear someone asking for a taxi, I know North Weald does have some very helpful A/G but they aren't usually that helpful. The penny dropped when the voice continued and asked for a taxi to the Crab & Lobster!

And AFAIR there's a maximum altitude for certain ground stations too -- is it 3000 ft for tower/AFIS/AG? (Where is DOC listed, BTW? I can't find anything in the AIP or CAP413.) Use of VHF R/T Channels ..............In the case of TWR, AFIS and A/G facilities, communications on these frequencies should be restricted as far as possible to heights up to 1000 ft in the immediate vicinity of the aerodrome concerned and in any event within 10 nm and 3000 ft. |
Unimpressed the other day when landing at a certain aerodrome (not a million miles from Oxford) to hear some bizjet operator saying "Ah - we're still with Paris, estimating you at (27 minutes time). Could you blah, blah, waffle arrange for a car to pick up our passenger, blah, blah...."
10 miles, di ckhead! Rang their SATCO later to suggest that the pilot was rebriefed NOT to use Tower frequency as a 'Company' frequency. When listening to the Sovs chatting on their Bear-to-Bear frequency many years ago, we used to get breakthrough from a UK-based flying training aerodrome on occasion.... |
I heard one or two calls for Peterbourgh Sibson in the Blackbushe circuit on Saturday and I often hear French folk at Lashenden.

During nice flying days nearly always hear someone calling Compton Abbas when I am near (and talking to) Sywell.
